2017 Summer Signings

For sure but we currently have Ring so that's not needed.
I'm thinking maybe for next season him playing beside Ring in kind of an "empty bucket", essentially taking over for Herrera, or taking Ring's current role, and having Ring play Herrera's current role.

Fuchs can probably play LB, CDM, and CB in MLS.

That said, I don't think he's coming this summer. He's been seen in NY a lot recently, but he bought a house here a few years ago and it's the offseason, so that's not a new development. We probably don't have the TAM right now, definitely don't have a DP spot, and Fuchs has a full season left on 2-3x the wages he would get from us.

I'd say there's a 50-75% chance he joins in 2019.
Dude, forum posters have made vague comments about having inside info.

Signing already confirmed.

Danny Williams is available on a free transfer. I don't think we have the budget or the need for him necessarily, but he would be a good MLS target this summer.

Conor O'Brien is also available on a free. He could be a good depth signing to basically replace Mikey Lopez as the backup to Herrera and Ring.

EDIT: One more cheap American available on a free - Shawn Barry. Playing in the German third tier. Looks like he could be a depth signing for CB and RB.

EDIT: For completeness, last American on a free that piques interest is forward Rubio Rubin.

Good stuff, generally, but Danny Williams seems likely to sign with Huddersfield and finally get that shot in the EPL.

Where does Fuchs fit unless you go back 3? He requires a formation shift and it moves your best CB to the right side. I guess that has worked for Chelsea, but why do that now? seems like an NYCFC 1.0 signing to me.

Not sure why that would be, but happy to hear more.

We are now good at LB depth, that's for sure, with a really good one in Matarrita and a serviceable backup in Sweat. Maybe Fuchs plays on the right?

I suppose this would make sense if we knew we were selling Matarrita, but that seems a lot less likely - at least this summer - given his time off with that injury.

Huh? Fuchs plays left back, and NYCFC uses a Left Back. How has the formation changed if he's slotted in?

If we get him, we would be lucking into a top tier way better than MLS quality defender simply as a result of the NY and personal connections. You have to take advantage of that if the economics are reasonable and it's not at the expense of a more important need (important ifs, of course).

If Mata does go soon, he is an immediate (and huge) upgrade over Mata and becomes likely the best FB in the league.

With that said, I have no basis to gauge how much you impact his effectiveness by having him play in the middle, and I never love the idea of even great backs switching to the opposite side of the field because you change the upside of a skill set, and it's often difficult to reverse the vision and muscle memory. Given his talent, he can probably play anywhere well and effectively in the MLS, yet not necessarily at his usual EPL level. So, at left back he's a no brainer, and a massive game changer for the right price, especially if Mata is moving. Even if Mata is not moving, I wouldn't have a problem with Mata being a utility player, off-the-bench weapon or spot starter (let me have it Mata lovers). This is not a working around Pirlo situation. It would be maximizing the use of tremendous assets situation. There is no reason not to let him play his natural position.

Moving him elsewhere just for the sake of it gives me some pause, but certainly not deal breaker pause. But I don't really think that would even be necessary.

We could get us a Jon Flannigan loan for the rest of the year. He'd be wise to go somewhere to play at least a few games.

If we didn't need a RB so bad, I wouldn't even joke. But we do. So I am.

We have a LB already. Where does Matarrita play?
PV hasn't been afraid to bring Mata in as an offensive wing the last two matches.

We're all guilty of it at times, but don't fall into the trap of pigeonholing a player with versatile skills to a single position.

REALLY liked him in the pre-season. Nowhere for him to play right now. Kid has a future in MLS. Would love to see an extended look at him but he doesn't fit with the current set-up.
