2017 Summer Signings

So since we get crushed by Toronto, and we are happy to squeak by a middling red bulls team at home, we know we have gaping holes and have been decimated by injury with no backups in sight, I guess the FO is happy being about a 3rd place team.

I've disliked the job Reyna has done since 2015, but I don't know how anyone can support him at this point. The roster is just not even functional. We've been without a backup for Callens all year. The Mix debacle smacks of a power play between him and mix. Raises to some of the worst players on the team.

I'm not so completely pessimistic as you, Tom, but it's hard not to think you're spot on here

I'm disappointed with the lack of depth because of all the injuries but I'm not sure how much Reyna could do. Mistakes were made in putting this team together from the beginning. A lot has already been said about the money spent on Mix and Pirlo. Yes, academy teams should have started earlier. But to call this roster "not even functional" is unreasonable. We're 3rd in the east and supports shield. I also think most of the players brought in this last off-season are doing well for us: Ring, Maxi, Wallace, Lewis, Herrera... All good signings and draft picks.

I agree on the starters, but we have positions that do not have a backup, and that's been the case all year. The coach asked for players. We know there was some degree of salary cap available because we heard that people were working on moves all weekend.

This is what worries me a bit. Vieira didn't need to tell Aranos that he wants to add 2-3 players this window if he knew they may not be adding any. If Vieira was speaking publicly to pressure the front office, that's a crack.

Yeah, he was out of line. You don't publicly pressure your boss. That's BS.

“We have identified the players and people are working to make it happen,” said Vieira. “I hope it is a possibility because we need to refresh the team and bring new faces and a new dynamic in the dressing room and on the field and I want to put more pressure on our current players – we need to bring those players.”

Vieira said that the transfer targets are both domestic and international. If reinforcements arrive, it will be achieved with limited cap space. NYCFC currently has two international slots available following the addition of Miguel Camargo to the season-ending injured list.

I really wanna know who the players are...

I really want to know what he's referring to with a "new dynamic in the dressing room." That sounds like grumbling going on....

Actually, it's quite easy.
I'm disappointed with the lack of depth because of all the injuries but I'm not sure how much Reyna could do. . . . I also think most of the players brought in this last off-season are doing well for us: Ring, Maxi, Wallace, Lewis, Herrera. . . .
I think that y'all perhaps are letting the perfect get in the way of the good, here. There might not have been a perfect deal out there, but we absolutely need depth. Our opinions here aside, Patrick has acknowledged as much on the record. We had cap space enough for it; we even traded that international spot to gain a little more flexibility. Lots of other teams managed to sign defenders in the window. And we're somehow left emptyhanded. I think that has to speak, on some level, to our FO's competence. Publicly acknowledged need + available resources + other teams succeeding, but we don't manage to close the (or any!) deal.

I agree that our offseason pickups have done well. But even then, they came in late and scattered. It seemed like Plan A, and maybe even Plan B, fell through. On the one hand, you might say that if this is our Plan C then we've got a real brain trust working in here. On the other hand, given a repeat of the pattern this transfer window, I think we're justified in getting frustrated. I'm worried that our FO seems to lack whatever it is, that we somehow always seem to be scrambling our way through this process.

Don't discount the possibility that other teams in MLS aren't interested in dealing with NYCFC - if we're offering the same goods as another team, and we stand to gain more/be better with the trade, then there is that possibility that teams are ignoring us so that we don't become a second juggernaut they may have to deal with (besides Toronto). It's also doubtful that the teams directly in front/behind us would work with us either, so we'd then be limited to West teams and D.C./Montreal/etc.

I'm not making excuses for the FO, because it's amazing we couldn't bring in even one foreign player, but it's not as simple as going to a menu and ordering - the restaurant also has to want to serve you, and we may be persona non grata (for a myriad of reasons).

Teams will do what's in their best interest so I'm reluctant to believe we got boxed out cause they just don't want to work with us. Possible, yes. Likely, no.

Ultimately, the buck stops in the FO. We traded our international spot, got the cash and then used it for??????

Anybody know what we paid for that slot originally? We apparently bought one more int'l roster spot than we needed, presumably in the expectation of making a move that would require it. That move never happened, and we sold the spot rather than let it expire worthless. I'd like to know how much this piece of business cost. I doubt we came out ahead, or lost a lot. I expect it was either break even or a $25k loss, and I'm just curious.
