The Case for Selling TMac

This is a good thing to debate, so props to the original poster for bringing it up.

The correlation between Transfermarket values and actual transfer values is zero. I doubt we could get anything for TMac selling him in Europe or S. America.

We could probably get good GAM value for him in MLS. Maybe not the $400K that New Jersey got for dealing Dax, but he's a starting quality guy for a lot of teams. Maybe $300K?

In some ways, it would be a win-win for both sides. TMac should be starting for a good quality MLS team. That's his level. He is on the bench for us right now, because we need a more athletic player at that position. If we dealt him, he would get a better situation, and we would get a good amount of salary cap space.

That said, I am not convinced we should do a deal. He is still a very valuable member of the team. I think he is first off the bench if either winger cannot play. He's an important sub. We will play him almost every game as is. Add the fact that he is a local guy and has been on our roster from the start, and I really like keeping him.

I'm pretty much in the same place. If we could get $300k or maybe even just $250k for Tmac I would not be annoyed that we sold him, but on the whole I'd rather keep him. With his flaws, I think the flexibility he provides might be worth more than upgrading our only weak position, especially since I'm not sure we could get a solid RB this year with the extra cash.

Isn't Sporting KC playing Zusi as a RB this year, leaving out Abdul-Salaam? Maybe they'd be interested in a swap of TMac for Abdul-Salaam (and maybe you get GAM back as well since TMac has a higher profile).

SAS got a lot of praise for his play last year, sure PV could coach him up. He's only 25 so should have some upside.

You would think after letting up 11 goals in the first two games they'd look to be acquiring defenders, but...

Good call. I like this better than my Beltran suggestion.

The fact that they are playing old-ass, never-was-good, too-damn-slow Zusi in his place is ridiculous. Zusi is pitiful. His quality is only a product of Doyle & Co.'s weird brand of MLS isolationism, where it's considered thoughtful to write articles praising dog-shit players and then trash up-and-coming players who happen to be struggling to find time in Europe. Guess he'd have them go to SKC so Vermes could shit on them right here in the good ol' US of A.

Nope, heresy.

Tommy Mac is a legend, has buckets of skill, looks sexy, led the team in assists last season (after Pirlo), just got a new contract and gets the captain's armband when DV is out of the team.

Include what people said about having an American on a low salary on the books and it's a no brainer. Close the thread.

Really?

Entertaining the thought of selling a guy on our squad who will likely start 5 matches the whole year and will have many instances where he does not come off the bench is not worth our time?

We shouldn't discuss here the thought of selling a guy who doesn't fit our midfield from the athletic requirements that our formation has, and only fits elsewhere on the LW where we have one guy lighting currently lighting it up (Wallace), another we just traded up to grab in the draft (JLew), and another we just signed this season who is technically more sound (Camargo)?

We should probably go ahead and shut down the Stadium Thread too.

I'm not saying you *can't* speculate.... just that the available facts don't bear out the premise (and IMO it's a shitty idea).

Tommy Mac getting a new contract surely gives us more concrete thoughts about his future than the complete void of information regarding the stadium.

Plenty of reason to sign someone to an extension before dealing him. We may or may not be open to offers or even shopping him. But I wouldn't use an extension as proving none of those things are occurring.
