Worst
Mix Diskerud ($750,000): I can’t make the claim that this is definitively the worst contract in MLS, but it sure as heck isn’t good. We’re four months into Mix’s debut MLS season and we still don’t know his position or, you know, whether he’s even an above average player. He tends to look like grandma’s ornate, decorative furniture in that unused Great Room at the back of the house. Everything looks the part, but it’s the direct opposite of functional and ultimately gets ignored. Mix certainly profited off the shadows cast by his time in Scandinavia, but there’s no question this salary figure isn’t close to being justified. Yet anyway.

Let's talk about this. I've felt underwhelmed by his play so far this year, but never enough to bring it up. At times he's been outshined by guys like McNamara and Ballouchy.

Are you satisfied with Mix so far this year? Is he not the player we hoped he would be, or is Kreis not putting him in a position to succeed?

I think the latter is a big factor. He's been asked to do a lot so far this season, and he just can't run an entire midfield by himself.

Lampard might help a little, but I'm actually more excited to have Pirlo and Jacobson behind him on the pitch. Yes, Jacobson stays on in my ideal formation. From that lineup, anything defensively we get from Mix is a bonus, and he's completely freed up from defensive and distribution responsibilities.

Hopefully he responds well to his new teammates. I think his play over the second half of the season is very important for the team and something to watch closely.

I'm answering a question you didn't ask and coming at this from a very different direction, but how the hell is Lampard at $6MM and 0 minutes played in 20 games not our worst contract? Mix could take 20 minute naps on the field every game and have contributed more to the team for 12.5% of the cost. I mean literal lie down zzzz naps.

That said, I think Mix has been meh but I give him a pass for exactly the reasons you stated.

LOL We are paying Nemec $300,000 and Grabavoy $200,000.

Whoever wrote this clearly doesn't watch us play on a regular basis, Mix is class. One of those players who goes unnoticed by the highlight watching fans. He hasn't found a settled position in the first team yet but he's a cut above our other midfielders atm. Watch him with Pirlo and Lampard and you'll be in for a treat.

Puzzling choice. Of course I hoped he would be better for us than he has shown so far but he has still been a bright spot relative to the squad as a whole. I don't think anyone would disagree that he is at bare minimum an above average MLS midfielder. And his USMNT performances have suggested that he has potential to be much more than that.

Is it a lot of money for Mix, yes. Do we throw a lot of stupid money around for other players as well, yes.

Mix's play has definitely been 'satisfactory' so far. There was a huge learning curve in the beginning of the season for the whole team. Couldn't expect everyone to gel right from the start - they had no idea what each other's gameplay preferences are and zero chemistry. And that is most difficult for the center midfielder. Also, doesn't help that USMNT call him up all the time.

I hope we hold onto Mix for a very long time. He can learn from Lampard & Pirlo. Mix is an important piece of our future.

I don't think it's the worst contract, but I have been disappointed in his play so far. Not sure if it has to do with Kreis not knowing a fucking thing about how to play him, or that he's just had horrible support so far. He does show flashes of brilliance, so I hope that's the real him ready to burst out.

These assholes hate mix more than this asshole hates Lampard. They can't help themselves. He didn't come up "American". That causes indescribable pain to their twats.

It's Kreis. Seriously. What's more logical?

Love this.

This is the problem with soccer media in the United States. Outside of the occasional solid Grant Wahl article, there are a bunch of hacks writing useless articles. Who the fuck is top drawer soccer? Mix is our second most important player. He has been played out of position all year because the team has been constructed poorly. Despite that, he's played VERY well. He's a willing defender. His work rate has been incredible. I used to think he was lazy. He's had an incredible work rate this year. His touch is class. His distribution is second to none. Are RedBulls getting better value from Sacha on 400k? Yes. I think they are. But I think if Mix was played as an 8 or even a 10 he would be special. Instead he's playing as a shuttles because we need to get Ned Grabavoy touches.

The author has less soccer intelligence than Corky Romano. What a fucktard. Maybe I should start a website. Idiot.

I'm looking forward to seeing if/where Kreis plays the new guys.

With all the miserable moves he's made, it's shocking we haven't seen Nemec as a CB yet.

Saved me a lengthy response. There's this thing that happens maybe 5 or 6 times a game where he chases somebody else's man and then when the ball goes to another free midfielder he chases that guy, and so on until he gets the ball back. It would be funny if it wasn't our team. He's essentially been covering his own man, Grabavoy's, Ballouchy's and (to a lesser extent) Jacobsen's all season. I'm excited to see what he can do on the other side of the ball when he has willing and able colleagues.

Based on the little I know of top drawer soccer, he is probably one of the writers who believe that all the Germericans aren't American enough for our national team. So the disdain for Mix isn't surprising.
