Twitter Is Ablaze With Talk Of Frank Lampard, Too.

Wait a sec, I can't follow you yet. So it is possible some players don't count as DPs in the beginning of the season, but if bonusses kick in then they get raised to DP level?!? What if a club is maxed out on DP slots already then?
I think that's my point. Someone was saying that Lampard was going to sign as a not-DP but with heavy incentives in his contract. But if those incentives bring his compensation above the DP threshold, then he would have to count as a DP.

But I don't think MLS would allow something like that to happen. I don't think they would let NYCFC sign Lampard to a contract that says "Oh, he only costs $200,000, but if he plays in at least 25 games he gets $2 million." If contracts with incentives like that were allowed, then it would lead to all sorts of salary cap shenanigans.

Of course, if a player is already a DP, then I don't think MLS would care about incentives. If Lampard's base salary makes him a DP, then incentives would just push him higher. All of a player's wage above the DP threshold is paid by the club, not the league, and it doesn't have any salary cap implications.

what if MCFC sign him and he is loaned here.
I'm pretty sure MLS will be guarding against salary cap shenanigans that way.

Besides, while storing extra salary at MCFC would help out NYCFC, let's not forget that MCFC has to deal with financial fair play rules. Signing a guy like Lampard and then loaning him to NYCFC for only a fraction of his cost would saddle the parent club with a higher wage bill, making it harder for them to be in compliance with FFP.

S SteveMcSteve good post. Very well put.

Although I think that wouldn't be unheard of though. Is that what QPR did with Julio Cesar this year?

I think it is different because these two clubs maintain the same ownership.

If QPR wants to pay 90% of the salary so a player can play in MLS, there's not much reason for MLS not to take advantage of their generosity.

If Manchester City wants to do it though, well, that's just deliberate undermining of the salary cap.

I'm not so sure QPR ate that much of his salary. Weren't they in dire straits until they won the promotion playoff?

Yes, there was talk from fairly reliable sources of administration (the English equivalent to bankruptcy). They have made some very poor decisions since originally being promoted again in 2011. They bought quite a few veteran players that were really past their prime and then made performance-based sponsorship deals before nearly being relegated (by City, ironically) at the end of that season. That meant that their revenues were much lower than managing and playing staff wages, which lead to quite the exodus for any players they could offload. Despite their miraculous (and somewhat undeserved) promotion this year, much of their issues should rightly be attributed to 'Arry Redknapp's exploits. He has managed to ruin several other clubs he has managed with his cavalier (and in many cases illegal) transfer market dealings.

That said, it may become more common place for English clubs to loan players to the a MLS once City establishes it to be a beneficial model. That will likely help raise the standard in the US, as well, providing am amplifying effect to future higher-profile transfers.

QPR has to run afould of the Football League's fair play, not just FIFA.

I am hoping that some sort of loan arrangment is allowed by the MLS since NYCFC do not have an academy/homegrown system, it will be several years before NYFC is able to take advantage of homegrown player perks, this is a pretty big disadvantage. Getting players on loan from MCFC and treating their contracts like homegrown players would be a good way to bridge the gap

Lampard announced today that he's leaving Chelsea this summer. At this point I'll be extremely surprised if he isn't playing in NYC come march.

i cant say i love this one, its my preference to see younger DP's but he obviously has some gas left in the tank since chelsea wanted him back. Hope this works out, excited to see who the last DP is. If the cap is closer to $4m this year that means we can average $155K on the remaining players whihc is plenty for MLS. we can still afford to have several players in the $200K plus range in addition to the 3 DP's.

Cesar is being paid $192,000 in base salary, $202,000 in guaranteed compensation by Toronto.

Since he is reportedly making about $4 million per year from QPR, yeah, they did eat most of his salary.

Being a Chelsea fan I'm biased but I think Lampard still has a good amount to bring to the game so I'd love to see him at NYCFC
not being disrespectful, but MLS is a somewhat easier league than PL. My point is, even though he's getting on a bit, in MLS he'd do great. Him & Villa will shine next season. 2 CL winners, 1 EL winner, a WC winner & Euro winner, plus numerous league titles between them. So much success and experience in just the 1st 2 signings. Reminds me of that scene in Men I Black, when Tommy Lee Jones says "Imagine wha you'll know.....tomorrow".
If these are the 1st 2 signing, just imagine the finished product March 2015

No disrespect at all. As long as someone can physically get it done still, I think they're alright for MLS. Henry's problems aren't age, they're attitude and effort. If Lampard puts his best foot forward, he'll do great. I do think the league is getting better though and we don't want to be a retirement team either.

Villa isn't retirement signing though. I think that's pretty legit.

Charlie Stillitano was speaking this morning on Sirius XM 94 and he sounded pretty convinced that Frank Lampard was coming - so did Xabi Alonso. Speaking of Xabi Alonso, he brought up on Xavi's name as a guy who would come to MLS next.
