U.S. Open Cup 2017

Watching DC United play the mighty Christos FC, the last remaining amateur team in the Open Cup. Stream can be found at:

Totally rooting for Christos, of course.
1-1 at the half. CFC got an early goal but then DC United equalized around minute 35 or so. Good game so far. A weird aspect of it is that the Christos keeper is named Saunders and each time they say his name I do a double take.

4-1 full time, alas. Was good to see them though, and that's what the Open Cup is all about. And after the match they did a tour around the field clapping all the fans, and everyone clapped back at them, even the DC fans. Was a fine moment.

Former local soccer writer Dan Dickinson had a thread on Twitter about the Cup and issues he has with it's format, etc. starting here:

It's worth reading in full. Dan doesn't state it in these terms but as usual the issue in US soccer is how much can/should we copy other countries and do we have enough interest and money generated to do things better.

Not a single Seattle player was on the field last night who will play against us Saturday.

I see his points but there will not be a Cup wide TV deal at all.....struggle to get FOX and ESPN to show MLS games....much less likely to even get money for cup games ( plus ESPN used up all its money on NBA and college football rights). Maybe BEIN sport can do it?

he says that the cup lacks funding but then wants round by round prize money....how is that even possible if he says its broke? and where is the subsidy coming from if there is no money and the cup is underfunded. The whole 100M was a mistake to mention now USSF will get crapped on for it everyday who knows if its true and if it is they shot themselves in the foot as they sure wont be using it for this tourney. A cup sponsorship could do wonders though and help towards that goal though.

the ticket split is something that can sure be useful ( at least for amateur/ lower league sides) but it doesnt help when tickets may be given out for free ( See NJRB STH) or they are in a smaller venue and even then some may be given out for free.

i fucking hate the idea of replays ( in UK they love it but then complain when their players are gassed for Summer national team tournaments).

what i would say is that teams should promote it more and mention it more to give it more importance.....but i guess money rules the game. I do like the idea of the cup and the history so hope it keep growing. maybe nycfc should win it and since the rest of the league hates us they will take it more seriously :D

Seattle and Portland must have come to an agreement ahead of time that both teams would play B squads. We can't do that even if we wanted to without our own USL affiliate.
