U.S. Open Cup 2017

Did anyone else watch that McLoughlin kid and briefly adopt the perspective of Khiry Shelton, who in my thought experiment, had to be thinking, "how lucky am I to be at a club who actually tries to develop players? That guy plays circles around me."

Twellman harping on him almost turned me off, but he really looked like he could be a decent addition for some MLS team. I know he came in at 60'-ish minutes and was running at tired legs, but he just abused a guy who has been one of the better RBs in MLS this year.

Yea, McLoughlin looked special during this game (at least special by USL standards). I think Twellman said he was the second ever homegrown player for Phili, but it didn't work out for him there. He's only 24, so he absolutely could still land in MLS. I'd have no problem if he came and trained with us and we gave him a run out at some point... Vieira would be good for him.

Jason Richards might totally lose it with PV if that happened.

Rodney's last name is Wallace. Not Dangerfield.
We may not always be able to afford Wallace with the way he's playing.... and Jimmy M sure seems more skilled on the ball than Khiry - at the least he could be a good replacement for our 2nd overall pick (and cheaper).

Just saw that the Miami - Cincy game has been postponed due to lightning in Miami. No makeup date.

Lots of good sideline drama here.
- USL vs. NASL.
- Team wanting MLS franchise vs. team about to compete with MLS franchise (presumably).
- Poku!

I am really excited for this one. Miami seems to be easily the better team and could probably compete with the bottom of the MLS. I'm pulling for Cincy because they are the bigger Cinderella, but I can easily see Miami plowing through the Red Bulls or the Revs in the semis and becoming the big story.

SKC is going to win this thing though.

If the RedBulls win, does that mean they qualify for CCL 2 competitions in a row? Or does it open a spot for someone else? I've lost track with the transition rules we're working with now. I think it would mean 2 times in a row.

It means the potential for endless chest beating by their faithful....

But it would be amusing to listen to their chirps about a USOCup title considering the rest of their season is a garbage dump.

If I'm understanding correctly (and not looking at the rules) last year (2016) 4 teams qualified based on the old rules (that will be used again in 3 years time). RB qualified under those rules. They will play in 2018 CCL.

This (2017) year and next year only 2 teams qualify. MLS Cup & USOC winners. To play in 2019 CCL.

Next year (2018) the same. However, if the a team who qualified in 2017 wins a cup in 2018, we have to assume (but I don't remember reading it anywhere) the top team is SS standings that hasn't already qualified would get that 4th spot for 2019 CCL.

So, now to answer your question. Yes they'd play in both the 2018 & 2019 CCL if they win the USOC this year. (2 years in a row)

Thanks. So no "extra" spot can open based on who wins this year, unless Toronto (or another Canadian team) wins MLS Cup I guess. If one of this year's winners of US Open Cup or MLS Cup wins one of those 2 again next year, then a slot opens up. I'm not going to worry about how those are filled until it gets closer to one of them likely happening.

I think the only thing you left out (and perhaps you implied it) is if this year's US Open Cup winner also wins MLS Cup this year.
