USMNT: Looking to the Future

I think its time to start playing our youngsters, like really start playing our youngsters a la Germany after their Euro mess. I don't think you went far enough when you paired down the initial list. I'd rather give people who are at present playing in u-16's and u-15's shots. That way we can start really looking forward to winning the whole thing the cycle or two after them.

Here's my more brutally cut down version.

Forwards: Wood (28) (only if in CL), Morris (26) (Only if in CL), Wright (21), Josh Sargent (21)

Midfielders: Hyndman (25), Gooch (25), Zelalem (24), de la Torre (24), Pulisic (23), Adams (22), McKennie (22), (Carleton (20)

CBs: Miazga (26), Palmer-Brown (24), Carter-Vickers (23), Zimmerman (28)

FBs: Yedlin (28) (If in CL), D. Acosta (21) S. Dest (20)

Goalkeepers: Hamid (30), Horvath (26) Zach Steffen (25) Johnson (31) (Keepers are wierd with aging so this group isn't getting as much attention.
Jordan Morris has no business on a national team roster.

Altidore, as others have stated, is a joke. Mentally weak and has never come through in the clutch, even for his club.

Missed a sitter early on yesterday, and he never recovered. Dempsey should have come in for him.

Agree to disagree. By the time Altidore is done, he is gonna be the all time leading scorer for the US (until Pulisic surpasses him). Sure, part of that is longevity, part of it is quality.
Fart noise.

Give Jonathan Gonzalez and Joshua Perez call ups.
Josh has stalled out, either due to ACF or himself. He’s at a 3rd division team in Italy, a division where results are often fixed by the mob for gambling purposes. That’s not real football. And he doesn’t even start (which is a travesty, btw).

Kyle Martino has left NBC to run for USSF president. Bad news for ELL fans (imo, he's solid) potentially good news for the direction of the game and the national teams. His best asset would probably be much better selection of coaches for our senior and u teams.

Also, the exclusion of Jonathan Gonzalez probably isn't a good sign. I heard that they were trying to get him added to this roster, so the fact that he's not listed doesn't give me many good feelings.

Who else do we think is missing? I think Pulisic isn't listed because he really doesn't need to be.

Erik Palmer-Brown? I prefer SeanJohn to Hamid but won't go too crazy about that. Is Hyndman healthy?

What's the status on Zelalem?

Bedoya and Ream are the two oldest guys on the squad at 30. I don't see either playing for his country in Dec 2022, so you do have to wonder why they are in the mix. Perhaps it is to provide a little veteran guidance - I don't know if they are the right guys for that, but it's a possibility.

Personally, I would rather have seen Opara or Palmer Brown for Ream and Hyndman for Bedoya regardless of any guidance the later could provide.

Pulisic and Cameron need a rest and don't really need a run out for national team exposure at this stage. Some other guys are missing because they are still active in the MLS Playoffs, but I don't think Dempsey, Altidore, or Bradley would have gotten a look regardless. Maybe Roldan or even Steffan.

I think you hit the two bigger questions - Palmer-Brown and Hyndman.

Yeah, agreed on the presence of some veteran leadership. Though there has to be better guys than Bedoya for that. Hell, I would have preferred Dax there even though he's played a ton less for the USMNT than Bedoya has.

Good call on Opara, totally forgot about him.

I am just not sure who is available for veteran leadership at this point once you take out guys who are still playing or need the time off. Jermaine Jones? He is good against Portugal.

Do we need veteran leadership? Especially from our current crop of world cup qualifying failures? I say just go all young and let them figure it out themselves as the grow together. Don't poison the well with any of the elder statesmen heartless bums from the TT game.

He was going to be on the roster but he wants to be completely ready and healthy for Liga MX playoffs!
