USMNT Talk

giphy.gif
It was like a WWF monologue before a match.

When I went back to Twitter this morning to check on the tweet that was deleted and I searched for "miazga," Twitter suggested I search for "miazga racist." It was the top suggestion. I looked at it and the discussion - in both directions - was as depressing as I expected. Algorithms, dumb people, and our current culture is a toxic brew.

Got really tired of trying to find a seemingly non-existent calendar of fixtures for our national teams so I decided to make one. Includes matches for both the men's and women's senior national teams. I'm basing it off the page at https://www.ussoccer.com/schedule-tickets and I've set up a visualping notification to do a daily check to see when the page changes, so I should be able to keep it pretty up to date. The calendar is at

http://icalshare.com/calendars/9090

and you should be able to subscribe to it on more or less any calendar you might use. If you use it let me know if you find any issues, and feel free to spread this far and wide should you so desire.

Watching us warm up and it’s so half assed. Colombia is in full pace and our guys are standing around playing keep away at half pace. Very disorganized warm up. They even went to the sideline for a couple minutes and took a breather. So bizarre. Compared to Colombia we look like a high school team and it’s only warm ups.

With no permanent coach, it doesn’t matter what these players do or don’t do. The new coach will have his own ideas of who belongs/doesn’t. More than anything, this is more about not getting hurt and setting back their club season.

Lmao tried to tag Ben in a tweet and he blocked me. God knows when. First time I’ve ever actively tried to go to his profile.

The club held a limited invite watch party last night for the USA/Colombia game. There were maybe 80-90 people there. Patricof and Sean Johnson appeared, both mingling with the crowd and delivering brief remarks at halftime. There's no news to share, except that SJ seemed happy about the contract extension (no surprise) and Patricof was relaxed and friendly. If there were any truth to the speculation he is being pushed out he hides it extremely well. I really do believe he is leaving on his own terms. I spent some time with LionNYC LionNYC and R roxfontaine also. And hey, the USA was winning for a couple of minutes there!

I found this interesting. Berhalter is the leading candidate for the USMNT job - as I am sure everyone has heard. Wahl mentions Jesse Marsch as a candidate, but said he apparently offended Dan Flynn with some things he said when Bob Bradley was fired in 2011. Marsch was part of that staff and was also let go.

I think Marsch is a really good coach and would be my favorite pick for the U.S. job, but his mouth can get him into trouble.

Marsch has really only had success with RB because they bought into his hyper-pressure style and had the personnel for it and play in MLS. He was a disaster at Montreal. I don’t think his style will work at the international level because even with physically elite athletes, that pressure game can and will get exploited by teams at the elite technical level and are equally fit.

The thing I would worry about with Marsch (and also, to a certain extent with Berhalter), is they are both system coaches. They implement their system and find guys to carry it out.

You can't really do that with a national team because your talent pool is fluid and you need to alter your tactics to the most talented players at your disposal.

It sounds like Berhalter may be getting the job. And I think he's a hell of a coach, but I get the impression that he's more of a club coach than a national team coach. Would love it if he proved me wrong (assuming he gets the job).

Berhalter may be a system coach, but as a player, he has a lot of experience with foreign teams and coaches (as role models). I have significantly more confidence in him as a coach than marsch. Minus Kamara, berhalter’s players like playing for him.

And that is definitely a very important part of it.

And let me also clarify, I wouldn't necessarily be upset with Berhalter as the hire. I just don't think it would be the best hire for the reasons I laid out above.
