USMNT Talk

It took 14 months to name the coach that everyone knew was going to be the coach 14 months ago. What an awful, rubberstamped process this was.

I sure hope Berhalter's reign is better than the way he was hired, because this was pretty atrocious for the last 14 months from US Soccer.

I'm cautiously optimistic. He had pretty good results with an under-resourced Columbus squad.

Didn't know there was one. Was this an American Outlaw event or something?
I think US Soccer organized it. Invites went to US Soccer donors (a $55 annual donation program I've been plugging for years here). Invites also went to AO and the Sammers, but I got the AO invite email >24 hours after the US Soccer one, so I think they had priority.

Nice event. The host first interviewed Earnie Stewart. Then Claudio Reyna and Will Trapp together (both for their connections to Berhalter). Then Berhalter. Also free beer/wine and hors d'oeuvres.

Good stuff.

Is this the U.S. Soccer Development Fund? How does the $55 donation work?

It is separate from, though partially entwined with, the development fund. You actually purchase it once every year with an online checkout process, like a store:

Here are the benefits:

One connection to the Development Fund is you get promoted to the highest Gold Membership level if you give $500 to the development fund, but that's a much higher economic commitment than most are able or willing to make.

But the benefits for just the $55 annual membership are meaningful, and get better with length of membership and games attended.

Coach just spoke during the MLS Cup Final pre-game. I don’t have a ton of exposure to this guy but he seems very likeable. Looking forward to the Gold Cup. It’s pretty friggin awesome that a former USMNT player is now in charge.

I like that too.

I came across this bit of trivia in all the coverage of Berhalter’s hiring. He never scored for the USA, but it was his shot that Torsten Frings handled in the mouth of the goal in our game against Germany in 2002.
