There is not much fun to be had spending money on underdog odds to win. The way that I think the brackets will fall make it nearly impossible for any dog to make a deep run. The best shots seem to be both Uruguay (28-1) and Portugal (25-1) meeting in the Round of 16, and the winner having at least a chance to beat France in the quarters. Maybe the winner even sneaks into the finals, if Belgium can beat Brazil in the quarters, and Uruguay/Portugal can then play a close game against Belgium. Belgium at 11-1 may also be long enough to make a bet on Belgium interesting.

The way I see the bottom half of the brackets, it's brutal with Spain, Argentina, Germany and England. Maybe Columbia (40-1) beats England, but no chance they beat Germany in the quarters.

Of course, some unexpected shifting in the Group stages can change the pathways to success, but likely not enough with the five monsters.

ETA - this is not a reply to 21Architect 21Architect re Panama. Was just looking for fun whether there are any interesting possibilities.

Fox is just such a shitty broadcaster... they’re taking a pass on providing high-level broadcasts and are instead using crappy American commentators, with only 4 of them actually being in country. Even the article calls out Stu Holden as only being average/OK, and the other color commentator heading over is Meola, who sounds limp every match he calls (my words).

Wonder if SAP will be working on Telemundo?

They're trying to hype it during every MLS and Champions League match they broadcast, at least. They manage to point out every MLS player who is likely to be with their national squad.

Honestly, it seems like the US not participating shouldn't impact their viewing numbers THAT much... It's not like we'd have been too likely to get out of the group, so they're missing out on, what, at most four broadcasts featuring the US?

Or maybe I'm crazy and there are so many soccer casuals in the US that there actually is a huge viewership spike just for our group stage matches.

So as I mentioned a few months ago......I’m a full on Panama supporter. Calling in sick to watch their (serious uphill climb) group matches. England too. Nigeria. And the French.

But who will I be rooting AGAINST? I think we all have those teams during World Cup that we don’t care who they’re playing......we’ll root for friggin Egypt if they’re playing the Saudi’s.

I mean, rooting against Mexico always gets my rocks off. So there’s that.

And Germany. Germany can fine dine on a bag of dicks. I’ll cheer for Brazil before I root for Germany and that’s saying a lot. Can you tell I’m still a race car in the red about USMNT and Italy? Steaming.

But anyway.

Official teams I will root against:

Mexico
Germany
Brazil
Saudi Arabia
Sweden
Iran. (C’mon, we’re not rooting for Iran)
Belgium

Let’s see if we can get a good Top 3 consensus of teams we hope suffer widespread cramping on the pitch.

Panama is beyond an underdog.

They’re like Act Of God territory to win the World Cup.

By the way, should we have a separate World Cup forum? I would think that one thread is not going to be enough to contain all the discussion.
How would you recommend splitting it up? Via groups (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H) or match days (MD1, MD2, MD3)??
Groups would probably be easiest, then just have a knockout round thread once the groups are all finished.

just keep this thread continuous or one for discussion and thast it....most of the time it will be one game at a time.

Well, I think there could be all kinds of possible threads. Game discussions by group and then by round, maybe, but there could be other topics that pop up. Maybe discussions on certain players, or how the officiating is going or the coverage by Fox or really anything. It's a little hard to know what the interesting threads will be until the games begin. I just think it's going to get a ton of focus and trying to fit it all within a single thread is going to be confusing.

So either it's own forum, or the stadium thread.

Added a poll so people can voice their opinion. Based on the winner, I'll make the next threads earlier so people have time to post thoughts pre-tournament.

I'm assuming that by "then knockout round stages" that that would only be one thread?

I don't see why we would need a different thread for each knockout stage, save for maybe the final.

Seeing Italy arent there, Australia will get pasted and USA missing out, Ill probably take an interest at the Semi-final stage which will be :

Semi 1 - Brazil v France

Semi 2 - Germany v Spain

Pick a winner from one of those four.
