The league rule is that you are fined and suspended one game after accumulating 5 yellow cards. After the first suspension, a second can come after 3 additional yellow cards. If you get within one yellow card of a suspension (e.g. 4 games or 7 games) and appear in 3 straight games without a booking, you get one yellow card knocked off. That reduction can only be used once.

8 Yellows: Hernandez - suspended next game
6 Yellows: Facey, Wingert
5 Yellows: Ballouchy - have served suspension
5 Yellows: Allen - suspended next game
4 yellows (already reduced): Jacobson
4 yellows: Watson-Siraboe - have appeared in two games since last yellow
3 Yellows (reduced from 4): Poku, Saunders, Villa
3 Yellows: Mix
2 Yellows: Maestro, Brovsky, Calle, Mullins, Iraola, Grabavoy, McNamara, Mena
1 Yellow: Williams

Next Opponent
- Orlando: Kaka (M) and Brek Shea (D) are both suspended

Good post, one question I have that I think I know the answer to.

Once you get to 4 yellows, do you need to play in 3 games without receiving one for it to go back down? For example, Watson-Siriboe didn't play against Orlando for us. Did that game count for him in reducing his yellow count back to 3?

I'm assuming its based on appearances (and thus the Orlando game wouldn't count for Watson-Siriboe), but looking to confirm.

Good question. I will clarify above, but you have to appear in the game. Also, you can only get the reduction once.

As you note, this makes a difference for Watson-Siraboe. It's been 8 games since his last yellow, but he's only appeared in 2 of them.

Wow. Not one yellow for Mix all year? That's impressive for someone who plays all out the way he does.

I think Villa's 3rd yellow was worth it. It is great to see him so fired up and competitive. He seems like a pretty dour guy most of the time. And then he scores and lets loose!

Honestly, the loss of Facey is probably going to create a bigger hole in the lineup than any other loss. Really, really a big blow.

Villa's 4th yellow not a positive development.

Maybe you, and more importantly Villa, should have thought ahead.

Can Villa go three matches without getting another card? If he can then his yellow count will be lowered by 1.

I'm [almost] positive he will have the sense to keep his shirt on, at least.
Man, that would be a disaster if Villa went out on yellow card accumulation because he took his shirt off! What post-Victorian reason is that a reason for giving a yellow card? Is this an MLS rule or one adopted from FIFA?

I can't imagine Brandi Chastain got a yellow card for her celebration!

It's FIFA:

This thread has lots of unsourced speculation of the reason: game delay, political statements on undershirts, sponsors who insist their logo be visible on the highlight video.
But my favorite comment is "Players taking their shirt off after a goal didn't used to happen at all not so long ago, and no players in other sports do it, so it's hardly a natural reaction."
It's hard to argue with that. It's just dumb. The rule might be over-compensating, but you're allowed lots of leeway.

Villa has shown more heart and fight that anyone in this team so far. For sure he'll get another yellow and someone else will need to step up.
