UEFA has named Andrea Pirlo as one of 10 finalists to be named Best Player in Europe for 2014/2015. The nomination is based on a vote of journalists from UEFA member nations.

This award is only in its 5th year, but it succeeds two earlier versions. One, the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year, was won by Kaka in 2007 and Beckham in 1999. The other, the Ballon d'Or, was won by Kaka in 2007, with Beckham finishing 2nd in 1999. In 2005, Frank Lampard was 2nd, and Steven Gerrard 3rd. The Ballon d'Or was originally European, but it became a global award under FIFA in 2010.
