2019 Offseason Thread

Mark Booth is having a nice convo on Twitter today, with some ongoing follow-ups to his post back in November asking for feedback and ideas on the team's digital content creation. I think Christopher Jee Christopher Jee posted about it back when Booth first asked. Two things it looks like we might see are (1) showing at least some opposing goals in BTS videos (Booth said the decision to omit them was first made before he got here and it looks like he's ready to change it) and (2) a special BTS/interview with Dome about his plans for the offseason, preseason, and what he expects to be different in 2019. Both came up in the conversation from fan feedback.

I just don't understand why everyone assumes that just because we have nothing happening yet it means we are gonna do nothing. Dortmund this year signed a lot of players way after the world cup, which was "cutting it close", and yet you didn't see people complaining about the lack of signings because everyone knew they'd be coming. Same will happen here.

Dortmund have a stellar reputation (from a casual fan perspective) for dealings in the transfer market. I'd say ours is so so to pretty good. Past behavior is the best indicator of future behavior etc.

January 20th. If they’re announced by Januaru 20th, be concerned.

there's still a good 3 weeks for that. But I think even at the start of February would be alright as well. Ibeagha was signed on Feb 27th and he was very good. Looking at last season though, he was the only player signed post-Jan20th.

ETA: Ofori was signed Feb 20th. Them two. And they both played good minutes at the start of the season, iirc.

To aid the discussion, here are the off-season acquisitions before each of the last 3 seasons and this coming season, with dates. Summer transfers and players acquired through the Superdraft are not included.

Last season we had a comparatively early start. Prior to 2017, our acquisitions came comparatively late, which many believed contributed to a slow start to the season.

Americans don’t need employment visas.

That can add substantial time to the transfers. January 20th means you have about 3 weeks to get them visas if you want them match fit on March 3rd.

Players from South America and Scandinavia are probably not match fit.

You're 100% right.

That being said, I think it would be useful for the team to release an interview with Claudio and/or Dome asking them about their offseason targets. I think we'd just like to hear something -- anything -- from the team. The fact that Claudio is basically never interviewed, can you imagine the GM of the Yankees never talking to the media? Or the GM of the Giants? It's unfathomable. It should be unfathomable for us, especially this time of year.

last year Reyna was interviewed left and right about the offseason, and i remember it happening around the time of the combine since he was there scouting. I wonder if that'll happen again this year, though.
