U.S. Open Cup 2019

On one hand, lol Cosmos. On the other hand, this Hartford team has more USOC wins than NYCFC does.

Hartford are my more local team though I'm still more invested in NYCFC I'm glad to see them finally get their first win. It should be clarified that this was Cosmos B they beat so not precisely a shining achievement .

while its the "B" cosmos team, it is their main team. They have to be a "B" team in order to play in NPSL so then if any when they are allowed to be back in a pro league they can use the Cosmos name with out the B.

still, the quality of players probably still not of the old NASL. they have few players that have played in USL championship teams and internationals, the rest is made up of college kids from area.

Thanks for the clarification still this is not the same Cosmos that knocked us out of the cup a couple times IMO. Still glad to see Hatford get a first win. I saw my first Harford Athletic sticker on a car I was behind the other day which was nice.

ok so round 2 is done and round 3 is on May 28/29. im going to assume that what will happen is we are in the east "block" with NJRB, NE and the winner of the memphis/ hartford game. then the draw will happen there.

I understand the intent to schedule regional matches to cut down to travel logistics, but it’s getting rather old to be in the same pot every year with NE/RB. Variety is needed since lower-division progression cannot be counted on. Would be nice if this sub group, and the adjacent geographical region, is randomly drawn from NE/RB/NYC/PHL/DC so that one has 2/other 3 and it can be a rotating set of possibilities each year. Same could be set up for other regions of the country because how often do fans of Portland/Seattle or Houston/Dallas or LA/LA want to be drawn together? It’s inevitable that travel is required, and on the off-chance a lower team gets drawn with an MLS club a few states away, there should be supplemental travel expenses/support from the Cup org.

i think only portland fans complain everyone else i think have not played each other as often. honeslty we only played NJRB twice and both times i think we were "drawn" with them. expenses are just too much, its just how it is in a big country.

something that was alluded to was a start of MLS teams in a round of 64 with draws, and that MLS teams automatically become visitors in case they draw a lower league team. ( twitter chatter)

i personally want to beat NJRB or Cosmos in open cup at least once though so im okwith this

This is correct.

Plus, if an MLS team is drawn into a group with 2 other MLS teams and 1 lower division team, then the odds are 2/3 that it will play another MLS team. The odds are different, obviously, if that team is in a group that has only 1 other MLS team. Long story short - if we are drawn into the same group every year, we are being given a more difficult draw than other teams.

I have to think we are a year or two away from a straight 64-team bracket, plus play-in games. I'd love to see teams seeded based on their tier and prior season finish. Then take a look at each set of four and allocate them to corners of the bracket based on geography. For example, take a hypothetical 2022 season with 30 MLS teams, 36 in USLC, and 16 in USL1:

Round 1 (44):
44 USL2/NPSL/Local

Round 2 (74):
22 R1 Winners
16 USL1
36 USLC

Round of 64 (64):
37 R2 Winners
27 MLS

For the round of 64, the four 1 seeds are the top four MLS teams from the previous year, and down the list. When you get to the 7 seeds, you have 3 worst MLS teams and the best USLC team. When you get near the lowest seeds, you have USL1 teams that won in R2, and maybe even some Local Qualifiers as 15 and 16 seeds.

Let's say the top four in MLS were NYCFC, Atlanta, DC United, and Seattle. NYCFC gets put in the East bracket, Atlanta in the South, DCU in the Midwest, and Seattle in the West. NYCFC might open away at FC Motown in a 1v16 matchup.

Would be awesome.

My take is that it doesn't matter...... if we want to win this tournament it isn't about getting a first round draw against a USL team....because round 2 and beyond is likely MLS anyways ...... we need to be able to beat Red Bulls or New England... with our US Open roster......this year should be the best shot yet with all the green card and US citizen signings.
