CFG Out

So I was at a BBQ this weekend and NYCFC came up and someone mentioned our owners. Another party guest immediately said, "I'd divest in a heartbeat before giving another penny to those guys."

It got me wondering what is my own divestment threshold. In my client work I use what I call a bookend technique for this sort of question.

E.g., If Sheik Mansour became a paragon of human rights, won a Nobel Peace Prize and started giving away $1B every year to organizations seeking to build a peaceful Middle East, I would gladly spend more money on NYCFC. OTOH, if the Sheik dressed 100 babies in NYCFC jerseys and beheaded them all for sport, I'd cancel my season tickets and never spend another dime on NYCFC.

Right now I'm in stasis. I'm keeping my season tickets but never buying more swag. Yet there are crossover points that would lead me to spend more or divest and cancel my tickets. Where are those points?

My questions to the forum, (and answers could be about on field or off field)
  1. What would you have to see happen before you would open the spigots to spend even more money on NYCFC?
  2. What would you have to see happen to cause you to cancel your tickets and/or divest your interest in NYCFC?

NYCFC would have to change ownership or CFG wouldn't have as much control over the club. Kits would be able to be non sky blue colored. Articles and team information would be accurate to NYC (EST) times, player acquisitions wouldn't be released on man city's site, etc. I would have to see ownership show or seem to be interested in NYC as a priority, and not a step child seemingly used to cook the books and in some ways, an afterthought.

CFG ownership gets lazier and lazier, continue to release "stadium info" at the same time each year right before ticket renewals. UAE laws regarding human rights become worse/don't improve. If the club loses its "feel" and just becomes boring to follow or watch for more than two seasons I would cancel my tickets. I've already started purchasing less items than the first year or two, like home kits just being sky blue. I love our away kits because they seem to have the most non-MCFC feel, something to ID with being NYC (or NYC related) and not a sibling of MCFC.

Right now, I'm slowly drifting towards #2. If NYCFC continues on this path, I could see myself dropping my season tickets in 2-3 years.

where do people meet all these people asking about nycfc and the ownership/issues in stands? in my circles this doesnt come up i mean even at work which is a media company and has thousands of people and everyone that knows me ( a good amount and they are very aware of politics/ finance/ current events) knows im a big nycfc fan and not once i get asked this, hell i even see other casual nycfc fans. i get more banter of in field stuff ( the whole johnson/zlatan episode gave me lot of shit)

anyway:

  1. What would you have to see happen before you would open the spigots to spend even more money on NYCFC?- I dont buy a jersey every year (just bought my third this year with the parley) but i do buy the winter hats or a cap with the monogram i like, so technically im still spending just not much. Does beer count? cuz i buy like two every home game.

  1. What would you have to see happen to cause you to cancel your tickets and/or divest your interest in NYCFC?- It get too pricey even for GA in supporters section, or i move out of the city.

I think my family already spends enough on the team season to season in terms of season tickets, away travel, merchandise, and donations/auctions for City in the Community. A new stadium would be the one thing that would cause more spending as the front office is going to charge higher prices, probably. (Also I would buy nicer/better looking apparel that can be worn everyday; 95 percent of the stuff for sale should only be worn in game days).

What would you have to see happen to cause you to cancel your tickets and/or divest your interest in NYCFC?

UAE going to war with Israel and/or US; Unsustainable price increases in tickets; Relegation should it ever happen?

Off topic, but if there were hypothetically relegation in MLS, you'd abandon the team if they went down? Given your level of fandom I find myself surprised.

If we were relegated, there would have to be a significant decrease in the prices of tickets despite the level of hospitality for my tickets. It's not worth the price at a minor league level.

We'll never get this level of transparency from NYCFC/CFG

Except for the multiple times Brad Sims has publicly answered questions from fans this season? Does NYCFC get any credit for making moves in the right direction this year, or we just continue with the old grievances because that's the easy thing to do?

I remember there were City in the Boroughs events in the past, but was anything held virtually this year? Honestly if there was then I forgot, but otherwise you don't see ownership being as active on Twitter as Steve Cohen.

Brad Sims did at least one Q&A session that was posted on the team website. He took multiple hard questions.

The thing with Cohen is that he's a huge Mets fan and always has been; it's not just that he's the owner. It's a very different thing if you compare that to someone who's "just" a front office employee of a team that's only been around for maybe 7 years. I think Cohen's been a Mets fan since the beginning. Could make a difference in how you talk about the team.

or we just continue with the old grievances
Yesterday was totally acceptable to air grievances. Giving Lion a pass on that one.
