After months of work and years of discussions, today we are proud to announce the formation of the Hudson River Derby Foundation, a new non-profit organization dedicated to growing, owning, managing, and administering the Hudson River Derby competition.

Modeled after the Independent Supporters Council's annual Supporters Shield, this is a partnership between The Third Rail and RBNY's Viking Army and Empire Supporters Club to take ownership of this competition, before the league, our teams, Adidas, or anyone else does. It will be a competition owned by and run for supporters.

We are launching the organization now and will spend the rest of 2019 building the org, growing awareness, and fundraising through scarves. In 2020 we will officially launch the competition with a brand new trophy.

Maybe I just need to understand similar approaches like the one referenced but I don't understand what this organization intends to own/manage or do besides sell merchandise. The clubs/MLS own the teams and own/control the stadium. The league owns the schedule. Saying you are going to be "owning, managing, and administering" the derby implies that you have so sort of control which they don't have. Are they just trying to control the branding? Not trying to be critical honestly just confused what are they running?

I'm all for this.

Just, what is the money being raised for aside from a trophy for the derby?

Probably similar to cascadia or those where they have their own self-made trophy, etc. It's not league-run, but run between the teams themselves

The press release says a bit more but I agree things are a bit vague.

"[T]he Foundation will work to keep the Hudson River Derby focused on what matters most; [sic] the competition between two New York teams and their supporters."

Still not really clear what they do after they buy a trophy. I suppose this could help bend MLS towards finally calling this the Hudson River derby instead of the NY derby. But that still leaves a lot unexplained.

I'm also wondering how they plan to assign the trophy. Does move every game? If so, winning the first game of a season means holding it for 2-3 months and winning the second means holding it for most of a year. If it gets won every year, what happens if they split the points? These are not insoluble problems but there's no reason not to have this figured out already and publicize it.

i initially thought this was some soft of fan vs fan group game and they raised money for some charity, but does not seem to be the case. So who is pocketing the money?

The money is being raised for the trophy. After that, don’t know.

does cascadia cup and other rivalries ( i guess RSL/ colorado i think does thisor getting a trophy) have this type of foundation?

I'm assuming they're going to do teaming up with the teams. For example, if they have a lot left over after whatever they raise, maybe they'll help towards promoting the derbies and getting butts in the door... Or maybe they help in matchday experience like free stuff in-stadium or entertainment, etc... Anything to raise the appeal of going to HDR's

I’m assuming they’re gonna blow the extra $$ on business expense drinking outings.

I'm assuming the SG's are already registered non-profits. Why couldn't they simply do this within the existing organizations?
It will be cool if they monetize this and sponsor some type of youth soccer program. Like a pickup tournament between fans of each team.

Does this trophy go to the winning team or to the winning team's supporter's group? Seems like a really cool idea.

I’m not sure about the RB groups, but Third Rail is not a registered non-profit yet, though they have said to be working on becoming one.

How are they an official SG if they aren’t a non-profit???

Can someone explain to me what this passage means in practical terms:

The HRD Foundation ensures that the soccer derby in the world’s greatest city belongs to, and is run for the benefit of, its independent supporters.

The release has as much meaningless jargon than anything I've ever read from a silicon valley tech company.
