NYCFC Academy - General Discussion

Two academy members and one former academy member were with the USA U-17s as they finished 2nd in a four team tournament that was a warm up for next month's World Cup.

Andres Jasson and Gio Reyna each scored a goal in the tournament, and Tayvon Gray saw substantial time at FB.

Can NYCFC fix the USMNT?

Guaranteed none of them will ever be called up to the senior squad. (ok maybe not guaranteeed, but it's unlikely in the current state of the USMNT, where talent means nothing and politics means everything)

LB, RB, or Both because if you say he is a LB get Gray in the team ASAP

Even Gio?

Gio has a good chance due to his political connections :D

If he does get called up to the senior squad, we should see it in the next year. he's already 17 and if GB saw potential in him to be called up, there'd already be rumblings about it. But there hasn't been. Guess it will depend on how well he does in Germany and if he can break into the first team with some actual minutes or a starting position.

That's not to say he won't get called up in the future... but at this point in time, it doesn't seem likely unless claudio gets involved imho.

Gio will turn 17 on November 13th. He is a 16 year old who is playing with the U19 at Borussia and who has been included in their senior squad Champion's League roster. He is skyrocketing in a way only Pulisic has in the history of US prospects, or even beyond Pulisic's learning curve. But he is still super young, and to suggest that GB is already bypassing him at age 16 because he won't be able to break Freddy Adu's record senior debut age or something is frankly taking it too far. The expectation is that Gio may turn out to be one of the very best players the U.S. has ever produced, but it's still early.

I hope you're right! I wish Gio had stayed with NYCFC but he made the right decision to go to europe to further his development.

I just wouldn't put it past GB to bypass obvious talent without political or public pressure. I simply have zero faith in his player selection. I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

He’s also eligible to play for Portugal. And if US Soccer keeps on it’s trajectory I couldn’t blame him if he did. Cap tie him NOW!!!! While he still loves the red white and blue before he makes any Portuguese friends or has Portuguese coaches steering him in Germany.

That is true, although it would be a seismic blow to a Claudio's reputation if the son of a USMNT legend goes to play for a country he has only nominal ties to because of career interests (I don't think they spoke Portuguese at home or had much to do with its culture except for the ancestry, unlike most U.S. born Mexican-Americans who end up playing for Mexico)

"Gio Reyna excites me!" - USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter

***

His rising stock has not gone unnoticed by US senior team coach, Berhalter.

"I think of Gio Reyna, I wish it was four years later and he was at the top of his game," he told Extratime, ahead of the USA’s September friendlies against Mexico and Uruguay.

"That’s exciting to me, but I also realise it’s a process, I realise it takes time and what we’re doing is gathering as much information as possible to find out if they’re absolutely ready."

Lol Gio is not playing for Portugal

He may play in the Olympics for us next summer.

At the end of his roundup of this weekend's action for Americans abroad, Brian Sciaretta notes that Gio Reyna is training with Dortmond's first team.

NY IS BLUE

Scally played in this game, though he didn't go the full 90. Perhaps, he's still working his way up? Even Haak plays with the youth squad sometimes, doesn't he?

Haak played last year i think, this year i dont think he did.

Looks like RB couldnt finish the good chances they had and got them twice on a counter thought first goal was very good. I totally forgot that Dwane De Rosario's kid is in the academy.

The U17 World Cup roster is out and it's huge for NYCFC's academy: Reyna (of course), Scally, Gray, and Jasson all made it (and I think one of our academy coaches is on the staff too). This club is killing it on player development.

Would be great if we could sign more homegrowns too. Wish we had signed Reyna, but I guess he was good enough to skip MLS and head to europe, which is fine. I hope he doesn't get overlooked for the senior squad in a year or two. I know berhalter has said he's interested in him, but that doesn't mean he'll call him up. berhalter seems to blow a whole lot of hot air to me. nations league roster is proof of that. zardes and trapp... again. and zardes will probably play over sargeant... again. ridiculous
