The 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs

I know. I love it. Hopefully they continue playing well. Ruidiaz is eating Zimmerman alive. But Vela is looking EXTREMELY threatening and I feel like sounders are gonna give up a PK or a even a red card at some point the way their CBs are playing.

YES!! Ruidiaz is clinical.

oh no... LAFC fans are not behaving very well. what a shame considering their supporter section is so impressive.

20 plus years in I still don’t like playoffs for soccer . Whoever the champions wins up being their not the actual best team in the league imo . Probably wouldn’t be watching the final regardless since it’s up against nfl including my Bills but definitely no interest in it now .

Why is it any different than any other sport in the US? The best team in those other sports might not win their respective championships. Doesn't bother you there.

The whole playoffs in soccer bashing never made sense to me. The world cup is essentially mini leagues with playoffs. Same with champions league. No one complains about that.

i feel worse. If we beat toonto, we’dhave been a YS win vs ATL (w a healthy Heber) away from hosting the cup vs Seattle.
And Seattle fans on the MLS website are among the most obnoxious about our stadium. Would have been awesome to watch them bitch about it for weeks on end and I can take no solace in them being in MLS Cup finals 3 times with an average season point total of just 52 in those years.

Emphasizes the multiples of magnitude of Mata’s recklessness. He is NYCFC’s silver bullet and stake in the heart in the playoffs.

I understand. But we can't change the past. Given the current reality, I feel better knowing lafc got knocked out too.

Would've been great if TFC were to win and the Seahawks were hosting a game on 11/10 (they are on Monday Night Football at San Fran on 11/11) and the game would have to be moved elsewhere.

Generally speaking the best teams tend to win that more often than not. there tends to be like 3 candidates to win. or teams with "history" win it so its not seen as an upset or underdog win. I mean real madrid was not the best team in europe for a couple of those CL wins but since they are real madrid its not seen as an upset CL win.

as for US pro sports NFL may be the only one that still can be random ( maybe NHL too im not well informed on the strength of teams) due to the injuries and even ref screw jobs ( NFC Championship game).

Not sure I understand your point here. Are you saying MLS playoffs are random while the world cup and champions league aren't?

yes, at least they tend to be in the five years ive followed. portland/ seattle were not the best teams, took toronto two tries to win it, and ATL did it second year of trying. LAFC failed this year.

we may get a third seattle v toronto final and at least this year they are not the best teams in their conferences this year.

It's the final trophy of the year, regardless of format, it will always have the prestige. I don't think people will argue with you that LAFC was the best team this year, as recognized by the Supporters Shield, but they won that like 2.5 months ago. It's simply more fun for the consumer to elevate the last available trophy in their minds to milk excitement out of the game for another couple weeks.

Why did you use the "portland/seattle were not the best teams argument" and then ignore that argument when it came to toronto and atlanta?

MLS cup is the one that matters the most though, i mean NJRB has three shields, yet everyone cracks jokes on them failing in the playoffs year after year even in those shield winning years.

Are you sure? Man, I checked out last week and couldn’t care less about MLS Cup at this point. I’m now too focused on ManU’s climb back up over minnows like Norwich.

so you saw Liverpool v Spurs happening in CL last year? or Croatia making the WC Final? the best teams don't always win, but sometimes they do. ATL won MLS cup last year and were only 1 point off the supporter's shield. does that make it a random win since they weren't officially the best team in the league?

I think the playoff/tournament system is a great way to add drama in a shorter timespan than league play. You would expect the best teams to win it, but things happen in shorter time spans and less games. That's what makes it exciting. If the world cup or champions league were played out like regular leagues were, there probably wouldn't be as much excitement about either of them as there is in their current form.

While the top leagues of the world are great to watch as a fan of the beautiful game, it gets a bit boring when you know the league will be won by the same 1 or 2 teams every year. At least the EPL has the big 6.. but even that's more like the big 2 these days.

i guess i should of word it better.

Portland/ seattle = not the best team won the cup. In addition LAFC did not win this year so that means the best team will not win the cup this year.

toronto= best team won the cup, ATL i guess you can put here, as technically NJRB won the shield etc. but they got the revenge eliminating them. but at least in the east it was neck and neck.

so you see 2/ 5 best teams have won it, in the five years. so it does feel random.
