Not the same, but there is precedent for small-time soccer fandom. Red Hook has a thriving immigrant soccer culture with an entire food vendor system on weekends for the games played there, a location that is beyond difficult to get to. it’s not a 1-to-1, translation, but more affordable entertainment goes a long way with communities that don’t, or financially can’t, identify with MLS pricing, location, etc. Granted, NYCFC tix can be had for peanuts on the secondary market, but not all groups search that out.
That’s people going to play and watch their family members play, no?
Getting people to pay for tickets and travel to a game to see random not-good-enough-for-MLS players seems like an unclimbable hill to me.
Maybe he gets some name brand friends to play, but that’s not a sustainable model.
honestly this seem to be a different approach as other attempts at soccer in the area. This is not NYC team ( nycfc, red bull, cosmos, the dead fc new york and others) its being branded as a queens team. a "local" team within a city. of course others can go there but with population of like 2 million in queens they targeting them right now. this is actually closer to the "grassroots" approach that pro/rel people keep harping about. i really dont think it needs to be huge at all.
will it drive away view from MLS on tv? no. but it can reduce attendance for nycfc even further. heck i even seen RB fans tempted at getting season tix.
The Cyclones and SI Yanks both get pretty good attendance, so there is room for minor league sports in New York. Neither team makes any kind of wave in the media, but they're there and they draw. I'm sure this team can get 4-5,000 fans a game because if prices are cheap enough, a fun night out is still a fun night out. But no, they won't challenge NYCFC or the Red Bulls for relevance in this market. The big question is whether they can get a local TV deal. SNY last year had the rugby team and also airs some Cyclones games, so they have proven to be in the market for minor league sports. Maybe they get involved. That's the best way to gain relevance here. If they're not on TV, they might as well not even exist in this area.
I will say this, I would very much like to see NYCFC make this team its affiliate. Send players that aren't in the 18 across town to get minutes is way better than loaning guys out across the country.
It also makes it easier on QBFC if we loan them a few players, as we will help fill roster spots but also cover the salaries of said loaned players. We would benefit from getting fringe players minutes, and they can fill out their roster and save money on 3-4 roster spots. I believe Forward Madison had a few Minnesota United players this year, which seemed to work well for both clubs. Close proximity definitely helps.
Also the fact that the person running their entire organization is the biggest legend in NYCFC history -- there should be a connection there. We're not competing against them, so team up. It literally can't do anything but help both organizations. It'll give them some goodwill, probably gives us some goodwill. NYCFC should already be on the phone with them about this.
but does Villa want this team to be in anyway affiliated to CFG? if we want to believe rumors he had bit fallout with dome and CFG chose dome to stay and villa was let go and not given extension. i do think there is some stuff to clear.

wasn't that dairy factory thats next to the field in york college one of the spots that nycfc looked into for a stadium? I know it was like a footnote in one of the reports someone linked like a year ago. i remember looking this place up a while ago.
Yup, Abu Danladi got some minutes at Forward Madison this last season and I think there were a few others.
You're correct, it is that same site. I think the report was over a year ago, so good memory.
I have this awful feeling that NYCFC passed on some viable sites that could have had shovels in the ground already due to their obsession with being close to YS.
I also wonder if Villa had some inside info about this over the years and at some point said "these guys are idiots/idiotas" and decided he'd build at one of these sites if they won't.
true, but also depends what they planning to do with the USL team. if its like 10-12K then this can work. maybe a 20K one wont?

True true. But luckily, our opinions don’t mean much as onlookers to the process (except for
adam who’s already planning his kosher cheeseburger tailgates).What is interesting is how this all went down.... a rumor popped up earlier in the year out of the blue, attached to cryptic and generalized comments from borough politicians, about a possible new club with a possible new stadium.... then radio silence, but before the year is out, confirmation of the rumors with an official statement.
Considering how we see NYCFC operate, it’s both crazy and great at the same time, to see this materialize with little wait. Now while one side thinks there’s zero chance of success, that outcome is possible since maybe Villa is just looking for something to focus on in his retirement, a folly of sorts?!? But more likely not as Villa does not strike me as somebody who would waste his time on a losing (or stagnate) proposition. This has got to be a legitimate venture, with a serious (but obviously secret) white paper on how his ownership group proposes success. Doesn’t guarantee it, but villa isn’t going to lend his name to a half-assed venture. Maybe he’s going to be happy as a lower league team owner, or maybe his group had a grand plan to be absorbed as NY3 (ok, NY2 but MLS is ignorant to the Hudson)..... dunno, but however they go, it’s refreshing to see some rumors backed up in a reasonable amount of time.
