Queensboro FC

Will Villa suit up for Boro in 2020?

  • Yes, and I’ll go to watch him play

  • Yes, but I won’t care

  • No, and i don’t care now that he left NYCFC

  • No, but if he did I’d have to attend

Also, the DV7 academy is a pay-for-play soccer club just like any of dozens of other ones in the area. They’re still at the starting line of having an Academy.

That fact alone doesn't put DV7 at the starting line, as most American academies are pay-to-play.

However, I don't think DV7 currently has teams above U13 based on a survey of their website. So on that element they have some building to do. Excited to see it grow.

I love how the range of opinion on this goes from QBFC can’t possibly succeed to QBFC is a threat to NYCFC (as seen mostly on Twitter).

I hate this take, it's so dumb. NYCFC is not going anywhere. There's two possible outcomes here: (1) a stable NYCFC and a stable QBFC, or (2) a stable NYCFC and failed QBFC. If NYCFC fails, it will not be because of QBFC.

HOLD UP!

wasn't that dairy factory thats next to the field in york college one of the spots that nycfc looked into for a stadium? I know it was like a footnote in one of the reports someone linked like a year ago. i remember looking this place up a while ago.

And then you have the takes about how QBFC and DV7 have already done so much more in the community than NYCFC. I don't mean to understate what David Villa has done for local communities, but it's not close to what the club has accomplished.

I think Villa has a significant goodwill credit (relative to CFG) because he's not a distant, oil-rich, oppressive institution. Anything CFG will be discounted and anything DV7 and Queensboro does will be glorified.

NYCFC, NYRB and, believe it or not, NY Cosmos Academies are all free for DA teams.

They are in the same place as every other couple of years old pay-to-play club, which is to say nowhere near where a professional Academy needs to be.

If DV bankrolls free A teams at a bunch of age levels, they’ll develop something over time, but the he’s start they have now is, IMHO, non-existent.

If my kid was a top player in Queens, Brooklyn or Western Nassau, I’d go to at least 2 or 3 clubs before thinking about DV7.

Remember, very few kids/parents are going to aspire to playing USL, so not sure how they’ll ever grab top kids if it’s not free. And if they do, NYCFC and RBNY will still pick all their best players by U15 anyway. I know there’s no DV and it’s USL2, but Westchester Flames Academy is just another middle-of-the-pack local club.

I'm too far in one corner but you're too far in your corner (see the bolded).

DV7 has worked with thousands of kids in multiple countries. I'm sure much of the marketing is embellished, but there is a brand there and there is infrastructure. With other revenue streams (gate receipts and merchandising) that come from having a professional team on top of their developmental pyramid, they could go from pay-to-play to free essentially overnight.

After some discussion today we have decided to create a forum for QBFC.
I understand if there’s some push back. Would it surprise anyone if they become our USL affiliate? If after some time it’s apparent that a forum isn’t needed we can always change back. With all the information that will be coming out in near future I think it’s justified.

Great idea. Even if QBFC isn’t an affiliate, we should still get along fine. We can be a big tent forum — I guess, so long as the tent stays planted this side of the Hudson

No Cosmos stuff. LionMOD is putting out a notice!

They definitely could. It is so extraordinarily expensive that not even all the MLS teams do it. Just the uniforms and travel, if they play in a top division, would price out a very significant number of the local kids they’re hoping to attract. NY-area DA teams are regularly going overnight for regular league games, in addition to a couple of fly-away showcases. That’s why most of the DA teams have a handful of legit players and are topped off with kids named Dylan & Tyler whose families can make 5-figure commitments.

Despite repeated promises, the Barca Academy on LI is still pay-to-play for their top teams.

Cosmos only manage it because Commisso personally bankrolled it and continues to do so now, to his credit. I stand by my original statement that they are at ground zero.

I also have some big plans for my 6-a-side team next season. Can we get a forum too?

Watching the USL final tonight -- the quality is just nowhere near MLS. It's like if every player in defense was Eric Miller and Seb Ibeagha, and every attacking player was Tony Taylor. Just super poor on both sides. It's really nowhere close to MLS levels, which lends more to the belief that this team really won't be a major threat to NYCFC. MLS is light years ahead, which makes sense considering the salary gaps.

Everything you said is true, but I watched the match and enjoyed it a lot even though it's a level down. And I'm considering getting QFC tickets if the cost is reasonable. Wouldn't pay $800 for a season ticket but if it's more in the range of, say, $300 I might do it. Would definitely go to a few matches, at the least.

Sure, it was still fun to watch. It's just very much a minor league. The two products are not comparable.

Feels like MLS quality pre-Beckham. Which makes sense.

Remember how fast things are growing though. Three years ago, Tommy McNamara was winning MLS games himself. He's now hanging onto the league by a thread. Hell, he'd be an awesome CAM for QBFC in 2021.

Point is USL is 10+ years behind MLS in quality, but it might only take 5 years to catch up to where it is today, if that makes sense.
