2020 Roster Discussion

Jeez, Ofori gone? I understand, but I also don't understand.

Ofori was a loan and probably too expensive to buy from Stuttgart considering what he could offer. Club probably thinks they can get similar contribution for cheaper elsewhere.

Not sorry to see Miller go. Kinda feel bad for Bedoya, but that's the pro life. Caldwell - saw that coming. Mohamed - never knew ya!

Can someone clarify why we had an option on Ofori that we declined, who was here on loan, but no option was picked up or declined on Parks? Wouldn't the same roster rule and procedure apply to both players? Reading between the lines, I think Ofori is gone but they still hope to retain Parks.

My other reactions:

1. Looks like we are not buying out Medina, which means we need to sell him, which was always the better option anyway.
2. We need two CMs and a LB. At CM, we only have two starters, one prospect, and two squad guys.
3. Any other additions are a bonus, but we should get some bonuses too.

Unless the rules changed it used to be required that all MLS loan agreements included buy out option. The catch was it didn't have to be reasonable. So maybe they changed the rule and Parks didn't have one or maybe it was like $30M and not worth even mentioning.

We learned at the time of the Parks loan that MLS had relaxed the buy option requirement and Keaton's loan specifically did not have a buy option.

Semantics. We're not benching Callens or Chanot. Sands can play with them as 3rd CB or CDM, whatever you want to call it.
I know, but that's still interesting that they consider him Defense now, rather than Midfield.

My friend just made a great point!!!
2019 roster:
2020 roster:
James sand listed as a defender, rather than a midfielder.
...Interesting?
They might be trying to develop him as a CB. Hopefully he packs on some muscle this off season.
Midfield looks rough. Still no coach. Season is 3 months away. Let’s make some moves yesterday.

So to be clear, both Ofori and Parks were on loan to NYCFC. The club had an option to buy Ofori, which was declined, hence the mention in the release. The club did not have an option to buy Parks, hence the mention that his loan simply expires. Correct?

If that's the case, I wouldn't say we know whether the club does or does not want either player back. We just know whatever buy option we had on Ofori was deemed too expensive.

For the loans technically we can renegotiate january first but it doesnt look promising

The following players are under contract for the 2020 season:

Goalkeeper (3): Luis Barraza, Sean Johnson, Brad Stuver

Defenders (7): Alexander Callens, Maxime Chanot, Sebastien Ibeagha, Ronald Matarrita, James Sands, Joe Scally, Anton Tinnerholm

Midfielders (5): Justin Haak, Maxi Moralez, Alex Ring, Tony Rocha, Juan Pablo Torres

Forwards (6): Valentin Castellanos, Héber, Gary Mackay-Steven, Jesus Medina, Alexandru Mitriță, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi

We also have five international spots open, assuming that doesn't change in the new CBA. Our standard eight plus one from Colorado in the Lewis trade.

David Lee has always been the Cap guru on the team, and absent a GM/SD will be the one pulling the strings of player acquisition, but doing so without a coach and/or GM/SD is an exercise in tying their hands to players they may not rate. Which makes any recent decisions, including the exercising of Mata’s Option, a curious one.

We are thin as fuck in midfield.

Our entire forward group returns, so with all the international spots available I assume we'll be looking for midfielders, a LB, and a backup RB primarily. Maybe some CB depth, too. Already at 21 players on the roster after sitting at 26 non-loaned players this year, so there probably won't be a ton of movement.
