Claudio Reyna Departs NYCFC; David Lee Promoted to Sporting Director

How does losing a first time sporting director mean we're in shambles? Why are we acting like CFG can't find a suitable replacement? I'm not trying to be a homer but why does every move have to be met with negativity?

There are multiple potential ways to look at this:

1. Six years is a long time to have that role.

2. Claudio built the team from the ground up, now he's going to build another organization from the ground up.

3. There were reports that CFG was upset with him, so maybe CFG decided to let him go over what happened with Gio. Which is silly and petty, but doesn't mean we're in shambles.

4. We're in shambles and there are fundamental issues with the organization.

5. A mix of all of the above.

Dome seemed to be upset with the league moreso than he was upset with the team. Claudio's contract apparently had one year left and they were struggling to agree on a new one. That's from this article and from Twellman a month ago. So did Claudio jump, or did CFG decide they didn't really want him back? I don't think it's as simple as we're in shambles, nor do I think it's as simple as my Nos. 1 and 2 above. I'm sure there are a lot of moving parts here.

Reyna is a massive loss, under his leadership our TAM signings have been amazing, we have one of the deepest rosters in the league and our academy is producing extremely high quality prospects at an impressive rate especially with how new it is. I'm fine with it if this was his choice because he liked the Austin job but if it comes out that CFG pushed him out that will be very disappointing.

A front office that has had 3 managers in 5 years, having fired two, with a 4th about to be hired Prior to season #6, and one GM leave under unknown/dubious circumstances potentially tied to latest manager “leaving” coupled with ownership not happy that diamond academy player went to outside club. Add in that the GM is leaving a club with arguably the top academy and (finally) a permanent training facility to transfer to a club with zero infrastructure headed by the pariah of ownership groups, and it looks bad for CFG as an organization.

it’s about how when and why.

how. He left for another MLS team! A mid-market expansion team. Not LAG or Miami.

When. After finishing first in the East and having the best record in MLS for the 2nd half of the season and the academy he developed from the ground up was starting to bloom and sell talent. And right after the manager left after 1.5 years as a coach of the year candidate stating the club/ownership was not supportive. And is also rumored to still want to manage in MLS.

why? We don’t know yet, but the facts above tell us that if all the inside people with knowledge and experience are jumping ship to other spots in the league from what we all see as a team talented enough to continue to succeed. Then they must be fleeing the dysfunction Dome alluded to.

5 years on:
4 presidents
Need our 4th coach
Need our 2nd Sporting Director
Countless ticket reps!

I agree with you that it looks bad, but I need more information. If CFG pushed him out, then that's very bad because he was a very good GM with a track record of success, our postseasons notwithstanding. If Reyna is resigning because he's getting a payraise, that's bad. If he wants a new challenge of building up another new organization, that's not as bad. So we just need more information before jumping to conclusions. CFG has given us a lot of resources in terms of salary, TAM, and transfer fees for DP's. They have authorized spending to the level that makes us one of the most money-losing teams in the league. So let's be fair -- they're spending lots of money on this thing. So I'm not willing to assume the worst yet.

A GM isn’t like a coach who is always looking for the next challenge - GM’s inherently seek stability in the workplace and their life. Reyna has built an incredible foundation that’s producing on both the academy and 1st team levels, he’s entrenched in Westchester, and his last two kids at home are in/nearing HS age - not a great time to relocate.

With all of the fckery displayed over the last 5+ years by CFG, they absolutely do not get the benefit of the doubt.

And yet we have the most points in MLS over the last 4 years and third most when you include the dysfunctional first season. This has been a highly functioning sporting organization, albeit one currently in substantial flux, which is unsettling.

Yes, we've failed in knock out competitions. Is that because Tim Pernetti didn't stay longer with the organization? Did Villa fail to once come up big in playoff games because of coach turnover? Does Mata keep doing stupid shit in playoff games because he knew Reyna would quit after 6 years? Did Chanot float the ball backwards because ticket rep don't last?

Bottom line is this front office has built a high quality roster, and that is, IMO, clearly best measured over the large sample size of the multiple regular seasons. That the same players season repeatedly fail in knockout competitions is either on the players, or just weird bad luck.

We have no way to anticipate how this will play out. Maybe they hire folks who cannot keep up what Reyna and Vieira/Torrent built. But I can't predict either way now. It's hard enough to predict how things will go half way through an MLS season. 2016 looked like crap 15 games in. So did this year for 6 games. 2018 looked to be fantastic for 21 games then fell apart. Maybe Reyna was the wall holding the chaos at bay. Maybe the dual gap of a sporting director and head coach is too much at once. Or maybe this is an organization that has shown it can function at a very high level despite ongoing turnover.

I do not agree with your statement about GM's. I've seen in other sports how GM's will sometimes get wooed or decide to switch teams. It doesn't happen frequently, but it happens.

As for your point about CFG, that's very fair and you're right that they shouldn't get the benefit of the doubt. That said, I'm not going to blindly blame them for something that may or may not be their fault.

Yup -- there has been chaos in parts of the front office, but the sporting side has performed admirably under sometimes difficult circumstances.

Seriously, we are a joke. It's hard to pull for this team. Am I going anywhere? No but God damn, you couldn't have a worse start to this teams existence over the past 5 years.

Turnstile at the head coaching/manager role
Turnstile in the front office
No stadium in sight (I dont care about the recent rumors until its 100% announced)
No trophies (this I can understand given how young of a franchise we are, but that Cosmos US Open Cup loss still bothers me)
Never had three DPs on the field at the same time
The continued shitting of the bed in big games
CFG hands all over our musical chairs at the front office and manager spot
Every 12-18 months it's a complete turnover from top to bottom. You dont build a sustainable winner like this in any league much less in MLS

WTF are we doing? WTF IS THE PLAN??????
so sick of this

Not to 'actually' you but I'm gonna 'actually' you that we've had all three DP's on the field at the same time a few times ;)
The rest, yes.

It's harder to pull for this team.
FIFY.

I really think this is it. We aren't a dumpster fire. Our results have been fantastic. We've been fun to watch and follow. Most of us (albeit a diminishing number) are keeping our tickets.

But dammit, I liked Claudio. Losing him makes it harder to pull for this team.

At least temporarily.

Because losing Vieira made it harder. And no Villa made it harder. And Jack. And Poku. And Dome. And ...

It sucks when people you like leave the club. Fans tend to rebound quickly when the rumors of replacements surface.

I suspect we'll get over it as well.

( S1ARK5 S1ARK5 not a critique of your statement. Just a jumping off point.)

Lol I'm aware we had them on the field a few times but my point is that never for any real extended time that should have made us better.

We have been decent on the field and this last year was our best regular season ever and what did that get us? Continued instability in key positions. That's exactly my point. If people are jumping ship after the year we just had, my goodness, I dont want to think there we will be in terms of success on the pitch moving forward.

Either way we are probably in the worst spot we have ever been as a franchise. No coach, no SD, no DPs.

Trust me I try to be optimistic but I sense this could be a start of a bad few years coming up.

All of this changes if a stadium is announced and built within 3 years but like I said, I will believe this when I see it. I think the chance of NYCFC folding is higher now then ever before because I think CFG really see how difficult it is in MLS
