NYCFC in the Media Thread - 2019

She thinks it was on a Reese’s pieces cereal box, but she’s not sure

This is a good rundown of NYCFC's highly disjointed television presence.

Let's be fair and say this is true of all MLS clubs (a local TV deal and then national games on ESPN/FOX/Univision). Though the YES/YES2/Fox Sports Go only is the most annoying part.

What was unfair about that article? On the specific point you raise, it was quite clear about what portion of the problem is due to MLS and what portion is specific to NYCFC.

The author focused on NYCFC because he's a NCFC fan, not because he's unfail picking on them, which maybe you didn't know but why assume bad motives?

The vast majority of MLS teams has a similar situation where they share local broadcast networks with sports channels who have baseball teams, and are thus floating between the main channel and the overflow channel. This really isn't an NYCFC-only thing and its pretty disingenuous for anyone to imply that our situation is abnormal.

Frankly, I'd rather our situation over DC United, Chicago, or LAFC, which is only available at cost and online only. Being on TV is far superior to not being on TV, even if games get bumped by Yankees coverage every now and then.

Curious how it affects viewership. Theoretically something being free would make it more accessible to people. But for a lot of people, the kind of fee they're charging is probably not an obstacle and the consistency may help to build viewing habits and / or deeper fandom. Personally I think I'd rather pay.

I would guess that ratings on TV are always going to be higher, generally, than online only. Our fanbase doesn't seem to watch games on TV, our ratings are pretty small apparently. ESPN+ has what, 3 million subscribers or so, how many of those are realistically Chicago Fire fans? You're also not getting the fan that is looking for something to watch and stumbles onto the game, which I'm sure happens from time to time on regular TV.

It's an interesting question, probably no publicly-available solid information. The diehard fans will always pay, it's the fringe fans I worry about.

By writing about our team while not mentioning any other team's broadcast issues it is at the least being intellectually dishonest, and at the worst implying that our TV coverage is worse than every other team. I understand this writer is an NYCFC fan and that's why he wrote about our TV issues, but the article is highly incomplete if you don't talk about what other teams deal with in this league.

I'm fine with "incomplete" but "disengenuous" implies a knowledge of intent on the part of the author that I'm pretty sure none of us possess.

To be fair, Yankee games were broadcast or streamed on 7 or 8 of those networks as well, so it's not a terribly compelling point.

And most NBA teams have games televised on ESPN, TNT, local TV, NBATV, etc. NHL teams are on NBC, NBCSN, local TV, NHL Network, ESPN+, etc. This is an American sports thing, not an MLS or NYCFC thing.
