2019 Offseason Calendar

Am I correct in saying that though NYCFC can open camp on January 11, 15 days from now, the team has not announced either when or where it will in fact have camp.
Oh, and no coach of course.

We're opening camp in Orlando, with our first preseason match less than three weeks away on Jan. 15. From a post last month on the club's participation in the 2020 Florida Cup:

New York City FC today announced that the First Team will open their 2020 preseason in Orlando, Florida in the Florida Cup 2020.

...

Preseason will begin on January 11 and NYCFC will play a pair of Brazilian clubs at Exploria Stadium, home of Orlando City SC, during the Florida Cup.

Thanks. So they have commited to January 11. And yet no coach. And as you noted a game (friendly but still) in less than 3 weeks.

As for where, I was unclear. I knew they're going to be in Orlando. What I meant but didn't really specify was whether they have announced what facility they will train in and it seems they have not.
Thanks again.

The CFG coaching crumbs thing has been and will continue to be one of my greatest concerns about this arrangement. Maybe one day in hindsight, if a layover wins us a cup or we get a few years of Pep, I will concede on the upside. But it’s been a disaster thus far.

The whole plan to build a stable of coaches in-house, train them and get them ready for first team duties at various levels was a decent idea, but in practice it has not worked out, not even for Man City.
I remember one of the issues when Vieira left us was CFG wouldn't guarantee he would be in line to take over for Man City, so he left the organization to move forward on his terms. Now Arteta just did the same thing.

Both did so midseason, though of course losing an assistant is not as bad as losing a head coach. It's not unreasonable for CFG not to hand out such guarantees, but as long as they do not, you have to expect ambitious people in their system to get anxious and leave when opportunity arrives. This article also notes that there have been reports that Guardiola's contract has a break clause, which I presume would let him leave at the end of this season instead of waiting until summer 2021. I'd love to know when he has to give notice to trigger that clause, and whether NYCFC also is waiting on that deadline. It's conceivable he has to do it by the midpoint of this Premier League season, or simply by January 1, both of which are almost here. If he's leaving they can't assign any potential replacements to us, whether that includes GVB or others. They'd have an absolute rebellion if they appointed a coach then took him away for the big boys after half of a season. From our point of view, assigning any potential replacement is unacceptable even if Pep leaves in 2021 because another 1.5 year term, plus another midseason switch, is likely a disaster and would feel like a betrayal but I have to think they are considering it because otherwise why are they waiting so long to announce?

We hired an MLS regular and competed for the wooden spoon.

Since then, we’ve hired CFG regulars and finished 4th, 2nd, 7th, 2nd. There are things about it that have not been ideal, but it’s far from a disaster.

Finished doesn’t tell the full story. When PV left, he blew up a season where we were in a prime position to challenge for hardware. That was a disaster. The next season, the continuing transition to Dome put us in a difficult position and may have cost us a shot at the SS. This season is TBD but the transition is putting our CL chances at risk and undoubtedly will negatively influence our MLS season. Our team has been and is stacked. The management carousel has been and will continue to be to our detriment.

For me, if we end up repeating the Vieira and Dome cycle (take time to build a style, blow it up when the team is peaking) then to me it shows that either the ownership is incompetent (in that it's unable to learn from its mistakes) or that it doesn't care (it's fine with making the playoffs and being competitive).

You could argue that we were incredibly unlucky not to go further in 2019. But you could also argue that Dome pulled a rabbit out of the hat in getting us that far with 13th-in-the-league salary spending and starting the season without a striker.

I agree that it's inaccurate to classify those situations as disasters but also think it's fair to say that CFG are holding back from doing everything they can for us to succeed. And if that's the case it's fair that fans are starting to wonder why they should bother if CFG won't.
