2020 Roster Discussion

Is he a creator? Can he strike from outside the box? He depends on service? It’s MLS service. Look at all the goals Zlatan scored. They’d be goals in any league.

1. No
2. yes but rarely
3. Yes
4. lol nah not all goals, that long distance goal vs LAFC in his debut doesnt happen in any league, if he met a competent defense in MLS he was not as electric, thats why i think i think they were a better team as a counter attack team. playing against us the only highlight was his scuffle with johnson.

LAFC had a better defensive performance than we did and zlatan tore them up. it's a matter of whether he and the rest of the team were up for the game or not. we played the LAG last year as the 3rd game in a 3 game week. not to take away from our win, but they weren't their best either.

you can't compare chicharito vs zlatan. zlatan is a far superior player on every single level. chicharito will sell tickets for LAG due to the huge mexican population in and around LA and overall in MLS. I expect chicharito to score some goals but only if he gets the service he needs to score them. he's not gonna beat anybody on pace. he's not going to beat anyone off the dribble and create something out of nothing. his domain is about 12 yards from the goal. that's where he thrives and he will do well if the galaxy can get the ball in there for him. zlatan averaged about a goal a game during his MLS stay. I'm thinking chicharito will do about a goal every 3. i don't think he'll break 20 goals. he's not even better than vela. he's a big signing simply for his marketing appeal to the large mexican population in the US and potential for MLS to add international appeal by luring more viewers from mexico.

i don't think he's overrated. i don't think anybody is expecting him to match or even come close to zlatan's numbers.

is it really a better defensive performance when more often than not they gave up three goals.

EDIT: as for the rest, its true. he gets service = success, if he has to work for the chances then no he is not scoring, but seeing how half the mls defenses are not the greatest i think he can potentially rack up goals.

I don’t understand why the expectations would be high. He’s scored 18 goals in 3 years. Only 64 appearances in 3 years.
HES NOT FIT.
He wasn’t a featured starter for Westham. Subbed 24 times out of 55.
I don’t see how he could be a year older and now play at a 2-3x more demanding level.
He’s never been a starting caliber player in a big league. His best seasons were for ManU as a super sub attacking tired defenses with fresh legs. His ego forced his move away because he fancied himself a starter, and his career has never been the same. BayerL. was a bit of an outlier with the bundesliga being so top heavy.

He’ll probably score a bunch in MLS simply because he is a lethal poacher, but I expect he’ll perfect his 65th minute clap to the fans as he’s subbed off each match - flying and the physical/pace of MLS will wear him down. And wait for the dead legs after synthetic surface matches. Softened with every goal he scores, but still....

Chicharito is certainly good enough to do quite well here. When you look at the performance of players who couldn't quite break through at the top teams in Europe, you get a pretty broad spectrum, with Giovinco and Martinez at the top and lots of others all the way down.

So, one question is where he falls on that spectrum. Another is whether he spends his time poaching 15-20 goals or whether he exerts himself all around the pitch.

The MLS comparison to him and his goal-scoring style has to be Wondo, the all time leading scorer in league history. And I think, no matter if you think Chicharito is overrated or whatnot, I think we can all agree he's more talented than Wondo.

The interesting piece of this is LAG's style of play will need to change dramatically. Before everything ran through Zlatan, whereas with Chicharito now, he's not going to be able to operate in the buildup in the same manner that Zlatan was able to.

Wondo at least moves around the field and puts in a defensive shift. :)

Maybe a better comparison, as far as teamwork assistance, is Savarese. That guy couldn’t string two dribbled steps together and passed with a lead boot, but put a ball into the box and he’d find a way to bury it. The Metrostars always were a man-down until they got their cross into the box.

Seems like a fairly recent convert to LB. I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that he plays there more than any other position but the press release suggests he's our primary backup there. Our track record with signings from Scandinavia is pretty good, so I'll be optimistic.

Don’t know anything about him but that’s the one position I would say we absolutely needed more depth at before the next window

Well, there's your Ben Sweat replacement. Considering Matarrita's injury history and our fixture congestion, have to think this guy will see quite a bit of time.

Wondo scores the vast majority of those goals in an earlier version of MLS (Inforget which one we’re in now, 2.0 or 3.0).

a sigh of relief to know we have a backup left back now. although all signs and information seem to say he's not a defender but more of a midfielder. even in his interview, he says he's a midfielder. i guess they are hoping to convert him a bit since our outside backs tend to move into the attack often.

hope he gets his visa soon so he can start training ASAP. the sooner he gets assimilated with the boys, the better. i'm sure having that Scandinavian connection with ring, tinnerholm, and deila helps a lot. i guess the 3rd rail are gonna go back to the whole viking thing now....
