My first thought is that this is being forced on NYCFC by CONCACAF or MLS. There is like a 5% chance they decided this would be a good idea. I can't imagine they wanted to do this, and I'm very interested to see the quotes in the press release to see how positive they are, or if they admit that this wasn't really something they wanted to do. Frankly, I'm a little shocked the Yankees wouldn't let them use Yankee Stadium for this game. If the other option was RBA, why not go back to the Yankees and try to play it there.

We can take this as a negative, and it is. Or we can decide to embarrass the Red Bulls by getting higher attendance than they got for their CCL match last year. I think they did somewhere in the 3,000 range -- so let's do better than them. You want banter? Let's bring 5-6,000 fans to this game. We can either just accept their insults, or we can do something about it. Let's pack their stadium for our game.

the thing with that is that the reaction will be: well why didnt you support RB before nycfc etc...still banter but valid point? it would be interesting where they would seat the supporters. probably end up vandalizing the area if its in the south ward

As a show of good will, the club should have buses ready for those who need it and free tickets for members. It's a tough location at a difficult time for many who work in this area.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if they offer free tickets for this. In fact, it feels like the least they can do for playing at Red Bull Arena.

Thank you.

Our entire fucking brand is built on NOT being in NJ. It’s why we were even allowed to exist.

So yea. This is crap.

Which is why this couldn't have been their choice. This is being foisted on them.

Doesn’t the town own the stadium? I’m sure they are willing to negotiate a fair price because *any* revenue is more than they’d otherwise be receiving. They aren’t trying to be corporate assholes like the Yankees, they’re probably trying to balance their books and this will be a positive impact for them.
Correct. To settle the tax dispute, the town took ownership and Red Bull agreed to pay an annual rent. This presumably means the town makes money from all other rentals and would have discretion.

Yankee Stadium "wasn't available."

The Yankees refused to open Yankee Stadium for their secondary tenant. For a team they're part owners of. Amazing.
I agree it looks bad, but the Yankees have an 8 to 9 figure investment in NYCFC. They aren't going to treat the Club badly and put that at risk.

Well, at least the broadcast/stream will be a lot cleaner than filming from the Cyclone or from the bleachers at Belson.

If NYCFC advances and plays the next round at RBA, then it is an issue. Moving a single February game, despite all the drama and hand wringing, is not. Better to be in CCL than sitting at home.

its been mentioned ( tweet above) that next rounds it will be in YS. now we know anything prior to March 1st is a no no a t YS, possibly Citi field too.

It's one game. It sucks, but it's one game. I'm not sure what the Front Office is thinking. You take any other viable stadium over RBA, even in CT.

Maybe the stadiums are winterized on some way or another and the process of opening them for the first event of the year are too cumbersome for an event with a projected low attendance. They also may not have the staff as those jobs are seasonal and you'd have to assume a lot of the workers have different jobs in the offseason.

This seems the most likely explanation to me. I would imagine that the stadium and field go through a pretty extensive winter shutdown, and that it might be too complicated to move up the opening, particularly on short notice.

I haven’t been following this, so apologies if it’s a dumb question but why was YS or Citi ruled out being it’s the off season

If we have a +4 goal difference after the first leg, we should forfeit and take the 3-0 loss and still advance.

Also, having a closed door match would be most optimal decision. Avoids the people coming to jeer us, the NYCFC fans don't want to watch their team play there. An empty match is better than a soulless one in New Jersey.

Avoids the people coming to jeer us,
I was thinking the same thing about NJRB supporters showing up to root against us. Convenience, free time and pettiness make it a real possibility.
