COVID-19 - Leagues Suspended

Over under on sports being played in this country - June 1
Does the equation include safety being involved, or is this including a possible rush back too soon by a league hedging their bets?

If leagues are prudent about the safety of players and fans (if not behind closed doors), then OVER.

Them saying they're tacking the games on is a best-case scenario where they actually return on April 12, or whatever the date is. The chance MLS actually returns in 30 days seems fairly remote. I don't think we see any sports games in any league in America until at least May. And if that happens, it seems hard to imagine how we can play a full 34 games unless the season goes to Christmas.

My best bet is that the MLS 2020 season (all two weeks of it) gets voided and replaced by some kind of 'MLS Trophy' knockout tournament that they can squeeze into the summer/fall. Whoever wins it gets a nice trophy with an asterisk, the TV companies get a few vaguely exciting games as part of their existing broadcast deal, and the logistical nightmares of trying to play into December or January are avoided. It will mean financial catastrophe for a few teams, but hey, join the club.

I'll say somewhere in the May 15 range. This outbreak started here in February, that gives it somewhere around 3 months.
First (announced) case in China was Nov 17, and they had reportedly 266 cases last year. It’s still going there, and frankly nobody is certain China has been, or is being, truthful about their numbers or severity. So that’s 4+ months and doubtful they’re going to zero anytime soon. Supposedly, they had it contained to one region (who knows), but the US is turning up clusters all over, so we’re potentially in a worse situation only propped up knowing that social distancing/isolation was enacted faster (although still probably too late).

Plus, Italy’s mortality rate is like 7x higher than China’s, and Italy has a far more robust medical system, so while Italy does have an aging population, experts believe that statistically China is severely under-reporting and they aren’t under control. China is also experiencing “re-infections”, and many experts suspect that early discharged patients, in order to clear beds/facilities, are actually not virus-free as opposed to contracting a new strain. How the US hospitals handle that aspect will be important.

A couple of different factors.
before any major announcements from the White House a lot of elderly people and those with autoimmune diseases were being told to be careful and possibly self quarantine and avoid contact. That’s what started the initial buying. Then there was this misconception that all toilet paper comes from China and there won’t be any so people started stockpiling it.
most stores have emptied out their supplies and warehouses and are now just receiving orders from the manufacturer that were placed long ago and already in route. So expect the shortage to last a few more days to a week. Manufacturer warehouses will begin shipping out and clearing their stockpiles and then a couple more things need to happen for us to be back to normal. The manufacturers have to increase production and then increase the deliveries to the grocery warehouses.
I filled everything we got yesterday and by the time I was done filling the paper towels on the other side of the isle there was 1 pack left.

Yesterday we had more than a 100% increase in sales.

Just got an email from Delta offering skymile members an extended 14 day Disney+ trial, must be redeemed by April 30th. Guessing this is Covid-19 related with all of the school closings and social distancing.

Gotta give them credit, not sure if Disney is a normal partner of theirs, but organizing this is a thoughtful perk for their customers.

They offered this when Disney+ first came out. Great way to get families hooked.

Netflix should offer 30 days free to everyone. People would get hooked on it.

it’s how you get heroin addicts. First taste is free.

“The first snort’s on me”

I got back from a 7 night Eastern Caribbean cruise this morning and was supposed to top it off with watching Inter Miami’s inaugural home match at 2:30.

Strange week. Cruise was great. Symphony Of The Seas. 6,000 people eating and drinking themselves into oblivion (stopping in St. Kitts and St. Thomas). No one getting sick yet hearing about the FULL PANIC going on back on U.S. soil.

Then my employer tells me I’m to stay home for at least 2 weeks. Not surprised but I guess I wasn’t expecting that.

My question was just rhetorical, but this is actually quite interesting. Thanks.

I think leagues will rush back. or a league. MLS may be that league.

Mexico is evidently still playing. Went to closed door matches. There may have even been games yesterday with spectators.

Edit: just checked, the following leagues are still playing, so ramp up your VPNs and turn on the malware/ad blockers/virus protection if you need your weekend fix:

Turkey
Russia
Ukraine
Belarus
Argentina
Brazil
Bolivia
Chile
Costa Rica
Guatemala
Singapore
Vietnam
Bangladesh
Indonesia
Kazakhstan
Malaysia
Australia (???? WTF ???)
Algeria
Ghana
Nigeria

Thanks for this. I may actually watch the Galatasaray v Besiktas match today.

I actually think all the leagues are going to come back together. No one wants to go out on a limb, so I think we're going to see a joint statement from all the leagues explaining when they are going to start resuming play and the parameters surrounding it. MLS will definitely not be the first to return, because I could actually see MLB, NHL, and NBA returning to empty stadiums/arenas, and since MLS has said they don't want to do that, they might wait until public gatherings are allowed again.
