Premier League 2019/20

3 Leicester players have it. Arteta has it and I believe Benjamin Mendy has self quarantined after possible exposure.
You gotta figure it’s running rampant through the EPL now. Every player on the field touches the same ball(s) with every throw and FK. There’s shirt tugging, body checking, high/low fives, and helping the opponent up after a tackle, plus sharing water bottles when the trainers run out. The number of players confirmed in the last day is crazy.

Well if anyone was hoping to watch Premier League soccer this weekend, I think we can put an end to those hopes.

It's mind-boggling to me that as recently as 24 hours ago the PL's stance was "the games will continue, and with full stadiums". It would have been shockingly irresponsible and negligent for them to have gone ahead.

England has not canceled super league rugby yet (Rugby league) but ordered games played behind closed doors. HOWEVER a player on Leeds Rhinos has tested positive so their refusing to travel for their match. Australia's NRL (also rugby league) kicked off this weekend and so far their still playing leaving the South Sydney Rabbitohs (owned by Russel Crowe) as pretty much the only sports team I follow currently playing. Sure that won't last long.

Weird trying to listen to Sirius XM FC on the way to work. Will get boring real quick listening to Corona updates and you can only spend so much time talking about the greatest players/matched of all time etc.

A little bit surreal:

EPL schedule from Live Soccer TV app, with all matches listed as postponed

Lots of debate on whether Liverpool should be awarded the EPL title if they don't finish the season. I'd kind of laugh if they don't get it though I do acknowledge it would be incredibly cheap if their denied it. I do think it has to be an all or nothing though. If Liverpool are given the Prem Leeds have to be given the Championship and promoted for example.

i think its less of an argument for leeds though. Liverpool is miles ahead of everyone over 20 points clear. Leeds not so much they only like 6 points and could still mess it up like they did last year, dropping from automatic promotion to playoff spots.

Allowing Liverpool to win the PL is also different from promoting Leeds because the latter also requires relegation of someone from the PL. This is where adjusting the rules midstream is the most difficult. Creating winners is fun and easy.* Relegating a team without a full chance to avoid it is highly questionable.

* In 1981 major league baseball had a midseason strike that lasted 50 days. As they resolved the labor issues and planned how to fix the broken season, they decided to crown every division leader as of the interruption as playoff participants after-the-fact. They then started a second half mini-season with everyone at a 0-0 record, and the winners of each half faced off before resuming he regular playoffs. There were complaints to be sure that those 4 teams received an unfair gift, but as there were no easily identifiable losers in the process, it went forward without major controversy.

Liverpool are the clear champions, they should get it.

If they don't continue the season, I don't know how you relegate teams based off 66% of the season. They should promote the top-2 teams in the Championship and play next year with 22 teams, then relegate 5 teams next year so they can get it back to 20.

They’ve played over 3/4 of the season. 29 of 38 matches. It stinks for teams at the bottom to go down without knowing if they’d be able to claw their way back, but the flip side is through 75%+ of the season they haven’t shown the ability to stay up so why give them the benefit of the doubt? And why hurt the odds of other teams in the championship by have to play even more games next year with additional opponents?

I'd love Christoper Jee's thoughts on Leeds situation (Sorry don't know how to tag) I lurked on a Leeds forum and the sentiment seems to be if their denied promotion either "We riot! " or "I'm done with football."

Bump:

A I hope Christopher is OK seems like he hasn't checked in , in a bit?

B some useless trivia while there's no news. Had not realized that while the Premier league did not invent English football, apparently it invented names on the back of kits in England. I just watched the highlights of Citeh vs Leeds from 92 and there were no names on the back of the shirts.

All the Championship clubs have expressed a desire to finish the season in solidarity with one another. I can't speak for all Leeds fans but after waiting so long I don't think I'd want us to get promoted in any way that could be seen as unfair. I'm a little worried that the demands of Bielsa's style of play may suffer from an extended break more than others, but it's up to us play the conditions as well as we can.

I saw the QPR manager Mark Wharburton suggested playing out 19/20 and abbreviating 20/21 if need be (perhaps 1 game per team pairing instead of the usual 2). That seems fairest to me. Better than cutting current season short. Better than cramming in fixtures and having players get injured. At least we can plan for 20/21 to be abbreviated in a way that is fair.

P.S. you tag someone by just typing "@" and then their name. Autocomplete drop-down will appear but it works even if it doesn't AFAICT.

i dont think its too much of a negative effect. bielsas teams almost always collapse april/may. this break may even help them recover from the physical demands. if and when they do start up again it everyone will be on the same pace starting slow.

I get not wanting to feel like your promotion is tainted but I also think getting "cheated" out of promotion after so much time would be a even bigger blow to Leeds and their fans than having the title taken from them would Liverpool. Hope we can finish the season but who knows how long it'll be till it's remotely safe?

That's a good point. We actually had our dip around the new year but had won 5 wins on the bounce before the cessation. If we do end up resuming (everything points to yes right now) I am gonna be a bit of a wreck before that first game back.

It's been very difficult to think about anything soccer related, but if you need a distraction, we discovered yesterday that NBCSN has been replaying some great games in full, showing 30 minute versions of other classic games, and showing other content (goals of the week, week in review, etc.) from random seasons of the past. The 30 minute cut games have been great (and included the Man U Ipswich 9-0 game, and the Manchester Derby where Owen scored in stoppage time ;)) so me and the boys have been enjoying those. Be safe and well everyone.
