2020 Roster Discussion

That was last year when he joined the academy. He hasn't been signed to the first team.
right; I said he signed for the academy on March 7th of last year... Whoops, should have specified that.
So, our usual week and a half delay to prepare introductory say-nothing videos
Sorry, I was misunderstood -- I meant he signed for the academy on March 7th 2019

"A club may sign a player to a contract without subjecting him to the MLS SuperDraft if the player has been a member of that club's youth academy for at least one year and has met the necessary training and retention requirements. Players joining MLS through this mechanism are known as Homegrown Players."

Don't know what the training and retention requirements are. But assuming those are met, he's eligible to be signed now if he officially joined the academy Mar 7 last year.

well it was already said that obtaining visas have been a pain this year and some taking almost a full month. And with all this stuff going on there may be more of a delay. so maybe a couple more weeks?
Boy how things have changed. We might not see him for little over a month if that.

If anybody is interested in a NYCFC-related project while things are slow, the Wikipedia page List of NYCFC Players is woefully incomplete. It was last updated in February 2020, but is missing many players from 2016 to the present.

damn bravo is back in argentina and barely plays? i thought he could of done something in the lower end teams in europe.

I'm not likely to go do editing on Wikipedia. But here's the latest version of my tracking.

So here are the players that the club has listed on its website over the years at:
The link format is: nycfc.com/players/##/first-last name

All links checked through old game wrapups and other team releases, or brute force using the wayback machine.

The draft picks from 2017, marked by * *, were listed by the club for some reason. Links for names in ( ) have not been confirmed -- just my speculation based on the 2017 pattern of listing draft picks.

I'll cross-check with the FootyLovin FootyLovin list in case someone obvious has been overlooked. Otherwise, I'm curious about the other blanks.

I can't believe Andrea Pirlo played for us. He kind of sucked. It was really unmemorable.
He was pretty solid for about a year or so. I remember one assist from midfield against DC in particular. But by the end, he had nothing left.

His 11 assists in 2016 remain 3rd all time for NYC and best among people not named Maxi. He had 5 in half a season in 2015. He only had 2 in all of 2017.

I recall that the big argument when trying to sign him was the extra year in 2017. The Club would have been better off paying him extra to get a 1.5 year contract.

I always wonder what could have been if him, lampard, and. villa had a full season from the get-go.

And a winger or two that could run onto Pirlo's long balls.

I agree with Gotham Gator Gotham Gator that he was fairly decent for the first year and a half (though required defensive cover which kind of handicapped the lineup), but one of his strengths was the deliverance of those long balls, and while he was here, we never quite had a winger that would make the runs to benefit from them.

We were never going to have all 3 for all of 2015. Pirlo was not available until summer, and the club made the reasonable decision to wait on getting a third DP until summer when more players are available. Then CFG screwed us by holding Lampard until summer as well and that was a handicap from which we never could recover.

My what-if is that Lampard shows up for camp, and maybe doesn't get hurt as he did in the PL before coming over to us. Of course maybe he does anyway, but it's my what-if. Then the club gets a summer signing DP who better suits us. I also agree Pirlo was quality for the first 1.5 years, but he never was the right fit. Also, if you're taking on an aging player who needs defensive cover he needs to produce goals at a Zlatan level, not what we got from Pirlo. Anyway, if all that happens, then maybe we make the playoffs in 2015. But my what-if is not all rosy: maybe Kries is not fired, and we never hire Vieira. Or maybe Mix never goes fully into the doghouse and has a good career here. Maybe we're not playing coaching roulette, with more stability. Or maybe that is true but we also have less success and a less pleasing style of play because Kries stalls club progress. Or maybe it is just better. The further you get away from the divergence the greater the range of plausible scenarios.
