COVID-19 - Leagues Suspended

1. I'm a worrier, not a warrior. I've been check my temperature three times a day even though it's never been above 99.0 during the past 90 days. I do have a cough, but I think that's more due to stress and anxiety.

2. Most singular sporting events (i.e. Kentucky Derby, French Open) have been postponed until September.

3. This isn't going to be better by May 10.

4. NBA may play its playoffs behind closed doors in a single area in Las Vegas, Nevada. ESPN suggested that MLB play a 32 game regular season in September/October and then have the playoffs.

With that all said...

I don't think we're getting a 34 game regular season of MLS. Maybe 24 games, most of them are closed door.
Here is my ridiculous proposal.

Quarantine all players, coaches, officials, and media until its clear that all are in the clear.

Empty out Randall's Island and close off the pedestrian bridge and only keep the auto access open for emergency vehicles.

Play out the MLS season (at whatever length) and playoffs at Icahn Stadium. The only "fans" in attendance for matches are players/coaches from the teams not playing. Live shots to "fan" player/coaches reactions throughout the match.

isint the grass in icahn smaller than even YS in terms of dimensions? I thought i remember reading that.....its mostly for track now. Thats why even the leagues that play in that island have another field they kinda set up for the USL 2 team that plays there.

Hope everyone is ok and staying safe and well. Postings are way down, obviously because of no soccer being played, and really really hope that’s the only reason.

If anybody is ill, I’m pulling for you. Take care of yourself and get as much rest, fluids, etc in as possible, and obviously anything else the doctor recs.

My sister, who turned into a self-proclaimed hermit 3+ weeks ago, is on day 12 and fortunately has been on the upswing this week. She had some really horrible days but fortunately no hospital visit. This is a no-shit situation we’re in, so please please please stay safe and have some OCD with sanitizing anything/everything touched outside of your home & anything/everything brought in.

Sorry to hear about your sister. Glad she is fighting it well.
Florida is in its early stages of this thing and the state isn’t doing nearly enough to prevent it getting worse. NY is doing a lot and numbers are still growing. It’ll be an uphill battle in the coming months.

My dad's in a similar position, but this only like day 4 or 5 for him. Hope everything ends up well all around!

The last few days I've had a reduced sense of smell. Very typical with me and seasonal allergies, but reports stating this is a possible symptom has me a bit worried. Overall I feel fine and still run daily and eat well so im optimistic that it's just allergies, although part of me hopes I have it and this is my only symptom so then I recover and am immune!

I bought a run down rv and hooked it up (electric only) in my backyard and I'm riding this out in that for now, probably until tests are widely available and I can take one. Unfortunately still gotta work, but found an unused office at one of our company buildings that I'm using exclusively and I don't have to interact with anyone in person.

Prayers for the loved ones of Ulrich Ulrich and Shwafta Shwafta, and anyone else fighting this disease.

Good luck. I'm sure you're researched this more than as it affects you, but I think many of the people who have this taste/smell effect have no other symptoms, so i'm hopeful you'll be ok. The risk is contagion to others, which it sounds like you are handling well. Best wishes.

My sister lost her sense of taste/smell for days. Freaked the hell out of her. She had other symptoms too, but thankfully no trouble breathing. Both senses have started to come back, not sure if fully or incremental each day. Her test finally came back today, 8 days later, positive.

was the loss of taste/smell the first symptoms? Good thing she is recovering.

Thanks. And no, not the first. It was after a few days. Maybe day 4-5 it happened. Probably day 9 she began to get some taste back, and it was only barely after eating kimchi which is about as strong a flavor as you’ll find. Progressed back from there.

ETA: The NYC portion of this post isn’t right. The national data is. See correction a few posts below

NYC's official data updates twice daily and the source of numbers below available in pdf form is here:

The number of new cases in New York city has gone down 2 days in a row. Wednesday saw a giant spike in the number of new cases that has not been followed by additional increases. Even better, the number of new cases today was lower even than the number on Tuesday. Two days does not constitute a trend, but it does indicate a nice break in the previous negative trend. In fact, excluding Wednesday, the number of new cases daily has held fairly steady for a week. There were 2,432 on 3/21, and 2,461 today 3/27.

New York had 365 deaths as of 5 pm yesterday and 366 deaths as of 4pm today. Just one death today.

I make no predictions and have no illusions. It can turn terrible real fast. But I think these numbers are cause for hope.

Also, Germany has been heralded for its low death rate.
Deaths per million of population in Germany: 4
Deaths per million of population in USA: 5
Based on this page as of right now.

Hope is a virtue.

I'd prefer not to open the chat room. I think posts are more informative and allow for better flow of thoughts during this time. We all are looking forward to the chat room open again for the next match.

Damn, NYC messed up the release of the data. The page where you get the PDFs was updated on schedule shortly after 7pm and claimed they had data as of 4pm, but the pdfs they fed you were still as of 8:30am and I didn't catch that. They have since fixed it. Still some positive news, though not nearly as much:

New NYC cases today are higher than yesterday, but lower than the day before. That's actually still somewhat positive though not anywhere as good being down 2 days in a row. I think it really just means 2 days ago there was an outlier of an upward blip. On the plus side, the doubling interval does seem to be increasing.

But the deaths went way up, from 365 to 450. What is most odd is there was 1 death reported between 5pm Thursday night and 8:30 am Friday morning, then 84 new deaths reported during the day. Presumably deaths during the night shift are not reported until during the next day, which is fine, but then they shouldn't even have 8:30am reports.

The national deaths per million still holds. One thing about those numbers though is they will only go up. Deaths as a percentage of cases can fluctuate. Deaths per population only increases. But my hope is we remain on the low end for similar countries whose data reporting I trust.

ESPN suggested that MLB play a 32 game regular season in September/October and then have the playoffs.

I was not aware that ESPN suggested that. That’s dumb.

MLB will be playing regular season games late June/early July (worst case scenario neutral sites with no fans in the stands).

Each team will play one doubleheader a week most likely. Maybe an expanded playoff format.

If social distancing is working and if people are doing it, it would stand to reason that we should start to see a slight lowering of the reported cases in the next few days. Because two Thursdays ago we started to shut the city down, and by last Monday the 15th we were basically all working from home. So I'm very interested to see if the cases start to level off soon since theoretically the 14-day quarantine/social distancing incubation period should be arriving now.
