As the host club, Orlando City SC will be given the top seed in Group A, which will be the six-team group, and will play in the first match on July 8. The five remaining seeds will be the four semifinalists from the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs: Atlanta United, LAFC, Seattle Sounders FC, Toronto FC and Real Salt Lake, which had the next highest points total in the Western Conference from the 2019 season.

So your Eastern Conference winner from last year doesn’t get a seed and Real Salt Lake does?

Better rig that draw and put NYCFC in Orlando’s group.

"The U.S. Soccer Federation and Canada Soccer have both approved the one-time change in qualifying method, as has Concacaf. The tournament winner's berth will replace the spot that was usually awarded to the MLS regular season points leader in the conference opposite the MLS Supporters' Shield winner's."

Reasonable. So it looks as if they are holding out hope for USOC. Big win for Canada.

Since the group stage is split between East and West, they needed another West team.

Basically, Orlando got our spot.

And what is with one group having 6 teams and all the rest having 4? That seems a real impediment. Not to mention that some team is going to get all the hard teams in that group and another all the easy ones.

so toronto's bitching about not being able to get to the CCL from winning the MLS cup paid off.

Oh, and here are the odds for those who care about such things.

Odds that we end up in the 6-team group - 45.5% (5/11).

If we make that group, odds that we play Orlando - 60% (3/5).

If we make that group, odds that we play the 3 other hardest teams - 10%.

So NYCFC will be in the six team group and play Orlandoooooo, got it.

That’s exactly right, and it’s kind of stupid. The reason host teams traditionally get the top seed in Group A is so the host team plays the first game of the tournament in front of its fans and with the advantage of not playing a top seed they are more likely to advance and home fans will buy more tickets.
None of which applies here.

I haven’t worked it out but I think it’s very likely that scheduling 3 games is easier for a 6 team group than it would be for 5 team groups.
But I agree being in the six team group will suck.

to add on to this. if the group stage points mean something for the regular season then wont some teams in this group potentially have an extra 3 points which can be huge in positioning for playoffs ( or maybe even making the playoffs).

Some teams have great social media posts on the topic except for us. Atlanta, Galaxy no wonder their social media numbers always take off and we’ve been losing followers on social. This is nyc I expected something more creative than a .jpg

Why the 9am game? Are they trying to appeal to the european market? Is it weather related?
I personally LOVE it! I wish all the big 4 league's would schedule at least 1 pre-noon game. It's probably the only way I would watch a national league game.

Orlando isn't even really a host team. Their facilities aren't being used, Disney's facilities are.
