MLS is Back Tournament - 2020

Opinions on players, managers, stadiums, etc. Fine.

Just nothing in bad taste. Something like "Medina is crap" is fine. Something like "Medina" plus the use of racist, derogatory, abusive, etc. language is not fine.

Personal attacks will not be tolerated. Respect all posts and users.

- LIONMOD

Now, what will you be having for breakfast if we play during a 9 AM match?
Lion, this isn’t a both sides issue. My posts did not repeatedly call anybody a derogatory name like 413blues’ did. Nor did I attack a player on the team comparing their mental capacity to a bag of tools or ridicule their personal safety choices during a pandemic. If you want to moderate anybody, start with those posters.

We really don’t want to moderate anyone. It’s an open discussion forum. We can disagree. We can argue but we should be able to hash things out as well. Some of you have been here Since the beginning and it was pretty rough in the early days. All Tampa counties with the exception of a rural one have issued orders making it mandatory to wear masks indoors. Not sure about Orlando but it’s a start.

I know. But when I was in school if someone did something wrong, both people were sent to the principal's office. Did it make sense? No. Is that any way to try and be a moderator on an internet forums website? Probably not. Am I trying my best, I hope so.

And yes, the ignore feature is a wonderful thing if users choose to use it.

For those interested, here is a Twitter thread that summarizes nicely how to think about what’s going on in Florida.

Basically, looking at raw case numbers alone doesn't provide the full picture. Another thing that is going on is that the average age of a positive test is much lower in Florida than it was in New York. There can be a lot of reasons for that, and she goes through it.

I took a quick look at stats for New York and Florida. I did the same for Arizona since they also have rising numbers and my wife is from Arizona and has lots of family there. I looked at the 7-day average of cases per million and tests per million and the number of hospitalizations per million (Florida does not provide hospitalization stats).

Florida is at 156 cases per million. New York peaked out at 494 (again, on a 7-day average). New York passed 156 on March 24. On that date, the 7-day average of tests was 617 in New York. Right now it is about double in Florida at 1,217. So, some of Florida's numbers can be attributable to a higher test rate, but the trend is still really bad, and Florida is not shutting down in the way that New York did around that time.

Arizona is at 377 cases per million. New York passed that level on April 1. At that time, New York was conducting 848 tests per million and had 625 hospitalizations per million. Arizona is conducting 1,690 tests per million and has 293 hospitalizations per million.

We get a 9am game and a 10:30pm game. Fun.

July 9 - New York City FC vs. Philadelphia, 9 a.m. (ESPN/ESPN Deportes, TSN)
July 14 - Orlando vs. New York City FC, 10:30 p.m. (TUDN, TSN)
July 19 - New York City FC vs. Chicago, 8 p.m (FS1, TUDN, TSN)

And for anyone who thinks this is just anti-NYCFC crap ... Seattle has a 9am game, too -- which is 6am local time. Eesh.

Man 10:30 start time will be tough for you all out there, but especially tough for the team. Seems fair to spread them out I guess.

really glad they are leaving it to the local commentators. I simply cannot listen to Twellman.

All group A teams have a 9am 8pm and 1030pm. It is fair.

I don't think it's local commentators. I believe it's going to be the national guys. Where did you read it was local commentators?

Top 3 in A advance, but the 4th place team doesn't have a shot so still a disadvantage. All teams have 9am, 8, and 1030 for group A, didn't look at other groups.

Unless the national guys do like 3-4 games a day, im guessing at least a good chunk of the games will have the local commentators, or a mix of one teams PbP guy with the other teams analyst.

Edit: "Each broadcast partner will use their own on-air talent and graphics packages." So that doesn't say local guys, but ESPN and Fox have both used team commentators before when they have increased number of games in one weekend or a regular team of for a holiday. I remember Shep on the Derby match recently.

AFAICT every team has one game in each slot. It would have been a surprise and unfair if the did anything different.
And the time 9am, 8pm and 10:30pm slots were announced weeks ago.
And the alternative is playing in hot Florida sun. Hell, the 8PM games will probably be murder, and even some of the 9am.

I don't know why people have a problem with this (and to be clear ZYanksRule ZYanksRule I realize you're not exactly whining so I'm not aiming at you), because this is the first time I can remember in decades when a league scheduled games for the benefit of players and quality play and not for the benefit of TV. I'm pretty sure no network is excited by 9am/noon games, and 10:30pm east coast matches.

This is ridiculous. It's like they decided intentionally to make a change that creates the appearance of fixing it, while not actually improving things at all. They just moved things around.

They could and should have given the 1030 slots to the far west coast teams, and then moved their 9 am games to east coast teams. Some east teams do not have a 9am game, but some west coast teams do... thats crazy. Montreal, NE, DC, Tor all have 2 8pm games and 2 have a 9 and 2 have a 1030. they should of all had a 9am game. Same with the other east group which has half the teams with a 9am and half with a 1030. Swap those with the two west coast 9am games.
