2020 Roster Discussion

Of note, we're past the roster freeze date. So we're not signing or getting a loan for anyone from the academy or the rest of the world to replace Heber in 2020.

EDIT: Please ignore this. MLS didn’t update all their important docs. They just posted new ones instead.

How can we be past the roster freeze date if the transfer window is still open?

MLS didn’t update their main roster and budget rules page since COVID. The secondary transfer window is still open, we can still sign a player if NYCFC can work out the budget space.

Still, I don’t expect much to happen.

probably right. really doubt the club is going to move to sign anybody. it's too short notice and there's probably no one they can go after.

So, Medina will play the 10 (possibly) and we have to be patient. That’s two players in the starting lineup playing out of position. I get that we don’t have a 10 but I feel like we could fix a lot of this by moving Ring off the wing. A front three of Mitri, Isi and Taty could be deadly with the speed and creativity alone. Then play Ring, Sands and Cacha/Parks begins them.

honestly, Medina is probably better at a 10 than at the wing. He doesn't have any pace and his 1v1 ability is average to non-existent. To be an effective #10, he'll have to step it up with his passing. I'd be happy if he didn't try to be maxi and just acted as a solid way for us to move the ball from the back to the front without having to go up the sides every time, which makes us predictable.

Mitri has the vision to play a #10 but his knack for wanting to dribble at people will result in us losing the ball in a dangerous position more often than not. Plus, as a #10, we need him to work hard on the press, which he might not be willing to do, creating a huge hole in our defensive shape.

I agree having Ring and Sands in the midfield is important. I'd even be ok with our midfield being Sands, Cacha with Ring as the #10 since he likes to go forward. We know he will bust his ass back and recover. Parks could play the 10 role too, but his ability to press is pretty poor even among a team who is not great at pressing intelligently (which is something I wish the coaches would work on with them).

The front 3 you mentioned would be ideal and are my pick. Any defensive line would be worried to face a dynamic 3 like that. 1v1 specialists on the wings and a speedy, hardworking striker in Taty looking to get in behind. Defense's worst nightmare.

The only guy that comes to mind in MLS (and I'm not saying he would be a good fit, I don't know him well enough) is Mason Toye. He hasn't been getting minutes in Minnesota and they just signed Kei Kamara so that suggests he's going to continue to be on the bench in the 18

what do you expect when the guy doesn't get any minutes? this game was after many games and Dome's confidence in him to move freely about the field.

Toye wouldn't be a terrible pick, especially if we can get him cheap. He's tall and a decent finisher and I bet he's hungry for some minutes.

more minutes?

For the record, I favor giving the wee man a go, he seems like he has a point to prove and at least gets stuck in. For some reason he's recently displayed an alarming ability to fail to put one foot in front of the other when in a position to shoot, but that's not out of character with the rest of the team.

Let him run around, whatever it is that makes him fall over instead of shoot seems temporary, particularly given that evidence above which seems weird to think was even a year ago.....

I haven't been around the forums much lately -- are we not confident about Taty getting more minutes up front and center?

I just slapped myself and splashed cold water in my face cause as I was scanning through the posts I thought i saw something about Ring being used as the #10 on this team.

one can hope heber's injury will force ronny to play mitri more.... but who knows. ronny is an enigma with his player selection

The Heber injury seems to fit the season ending injury replacement criteria, hopefully the team at least gets us a backup as we are pretty short on options upfront at this point. Criteria from the roster rules:

Season-Ending Injury Replacement Player: A club may replace an injured player that is on the Season-Ending Injury List with a new replacement player in accordance with parameters below.

The club will remain responsible for the injured player's full Salary Budget Charge. Clubs may execute a trade to create Salary Budget space in order to sign such a replacement player. This is the only circumstance in which a club may trade for Salary Budget space. Clubs are only able to receive Salary Budget relief (paid out of the club's own pocket) for a season-ending injury under the following parameters:

  • The injured player must be earning at least $100,000 per annum.
  • The injured player must have suffered the season-ending injury prior to the close of the Primary Transfer Window and the new player must be acquired as of such date.
  • The replacement player may earn up to $250,000 but not more than the player who suffered the season-ending injury.
  • A credit in the amount of the replacement player’s charge will be applied to the player who suffered the Season-Ending Injury. The club shall reimburse the League an amount equal to such credit.
  • Clubs will only be allowed to sign one such replacement player per MLS League Season.
If the injured player occupies an international roster slot on the Senior Roster, the replacement player may also be an International Player.

What the fuck is happening with NYCFC?

NYCFC announces that Mitrita is going on international duty (or taking a personal leave). And then someone else announces officially he's signed to a loan with an option to buy.

Vieira left on similar weird terms, but we knew for some time he would entertain better options.

This is worse than Lampardgate. It's midseason. WTF?

Does anyone think Txiki or Ferran even know about this bullshit
