USMNT Talk

Did anyone try to watch today's game against Panama on FOx streaming? I wanted to multitask while working but could not get the game to play. I had to put it on the TV in the next room which makes me much less efficient at both. On Chrome, Fox would let me watch almost anything but this game. Every time I clicked on it, it just switched to the Colin Cowhead show. On Safari and Firefox, none of the shows or games would load.

ETA: That was a fun USMNT game, for a refreshing change.

for a guy who’s home almost every day, i usually get to watch these. But alas, yesterday had me driving all over the island. Plan to catch the replay today. Excited Gio scored! Hoping this type of success vs a concacaf team opens berhalter’s thick skull to run w the youth going forward. I mean, anyone who thinks we’re winning the 2022 WC with players aged 26 and up please raise your hand. (I’ll make exceptions for brooks & yedlin, that’s it).

Ive had the same issue with Fox Sports Go recently. I couldn't watch Penn State vs Indiana a few weeks ago and couldn't watch either USMNT games. Idk if its a subscription thing, blackout thing, legal rights thing or whatever, but its been frustrating. Never had an issue in the past.

anyone really know much about this Nicholas Gioacchini ? I'll confess I'd never heard of him before but 2 goals on full debut not half bad. Obviously not easy to follow Caen or the French lower leagues.

I vaguely knew of Gioacchini. It’s good to follow Brian Sciaretta on twitter and at his website, American Soccer Now. He’s been covering Americans abroad for years now and gives a lot of notice to the younger players in leagues like that.

It was an interesting game. We have so much talent, but without the ability to play for a year, it’s not much of a team yet.

I don’t think Berhalter has any objection to playing the kids. Most of the guys in this camp weren’t in any position to get called up the last time we could bring in Europeans, which was a year ago.

Once we can bring in a full team, I suspect we will see some older guys to balance things a bit and add experience in the locker room. But the younger guys are going to carry the team, with the exception of goalkeeper and (possibly) striker.

Also, people better be ready for older players to have a bigger role next summer when we will have to field separate teams for the Gold Cup, Nations League, Olympics and U-20 World Cup. There are simply too many players required to keep it to just the kids.

nations league and gold Cup are both first team call ups. U20 & Olympics are not, and i don’t think anyone minds sacrificing the latter two to let the first team gel. I’ll also recommend that Altidore can be our one old fogy exemption to play in the olympics and keep him away from the the first team. Let Jozy go win us a gold medal, we can throw him a parade in Toronto when he comes home.

All true, but Nations League and Gold Cup are going to be two different senior squads. That’s going to require some of the old guard to be included.

does gold cup qualify a team for WC? I know confederations cup is done. Between all the changes and covid it’s hard to follow anymore.

No. It's just a separate trophy. It used to qualify the winner for the Confederations Cup, but FIFA has dropped that competition. WC Qualifying starts in the fall after these tournaments.

so goldcup is now a completely pointless tournament. Might as well set up a USA-Mexico friendly with a trophy and call it a day. I’d play my B team in the GC too. Who cares.

Ridiculous game last night. Granted, the opposition was terrible, but the team looked really good - very well prepared.

By the way, did anyone hear the conversation between Jon Champion and Taylor Twellman about James Sands?

Champion brought up Sands' name as someone who should be getting call ups (noting that he is currently injured). Twellman acknowledged that Sands isn't someone a lot of U.S. fans know, but every time he has a conversation with someone in Europe, they bring him up as one of the best young Americans.

Goals and assists only is a bit misleading for some the players - like Adams, Dest, Yedlin, Chandler, Brooks, etc. I wonder if there are other stats we can also look to see how they're performing?

Also sure feels like McKennie has scored more than that! surprised to see that number

% of minutes played is key. Are they impressing their manager?

What WM is doing at Juve is impressive. You have guys like CR7 singing his praise. Future is bright in the midfield with adams, pulisic, renya, and mcKennie. Add Dest and Brooks and you basically have 6/10 locked. Need to fill LB (robinson probalby), CF (sargent), a CB and aother attacker.
