2021 Roster Discussion

Anton Tinnerholm has played 300 less minutes than Ronald Matarrita, which is somewhat crazy to believe consider that Mata has been with the club for 2 more years (yeah, injuries). And Anton has 9 goals / 18 assists, which is 814 / 407 minutes.

Bingo. For everyone saying “Mata is a top LB in the league”, I’m struggling to remember big plays he’s made - although I can remember a lot of colossal screw-ups.

What Mata gave you as an “attacking fullback” no way made up for his defensive liabilities.

Mata’s last game with the team was getting run over by Quinones who had 3 assists from Mata’s side. I’ll remember the last one (?) where Mata got beat and then helplessly trailed the play which turned into an easy Tigres goal.

I’m quite bullish on CFG recruitment, and I’m excited to see what we have planned this offseason. But if David Lee gets this wrong or CFG don’t front up the cash, then this team will slide into years of irrelevancy. Two years without fans inside stadiums, a team and manager with no connection to the fan base or name recognition, and a continued trophy drought...that would essentially kill the club off until a new stadium arrives. Just look at the Red Bulls.

Red Bulls have a stadium, have had regular season success, and are still irrelevant. A stadium and big name players are the things that will put NYCFC on the map in NY.

I think my biggest fear in all of this GAM we’ve acquired isn’t the players lost, but that Ronny probably has a say in these new signings that will determine the success of the club over the next few years....
The only players signed since Ronny has been here have been Gudi and Cacha. And the timing and context around both of those (especially with a lack of games played) tell me that those were GM signings with likely minimal input from Ronny.

Understood, but it’s more the players he valued on the roster and the way he deployed them throughout the season. I shudder at the thought of the players he fancies in the transfer market.

I get that, I just see using players on the current roster completely separate from using transfers.

Some of the ways Ronny deployed players from the roster was maddening, but it was to do what he wanted. Example, he wanted his wingers to provide defensive work rate and to crash the box. That was not Ismael Tajouri-Shradi or Mitrita. That was Mackay-Steven, Medina, and Ring. (And somehow he determined that wasn't Taty, although the MLS is Back tournament opener against Philly Taty played as a winger and played very well IMO).

I think he's going to be vocal now on bringing in talented players who fit what he wants to do, rather than utilizing lesser talented players that fits what he wants to do better while more talented players sit on the bench because they don't fit.

Perhaps Ronny and David Lee get it all wrong this offseason, sure. But I have nothing to base any pessimism (or optimism, really) off of for this offseason in regards to Ronny's ability to help identify and attract talented players to NYCFC.

Pass

Go get a real ducking goal scorer
I haven’t watched any film on him, so obviously take this with a massive grain of salt, but he’s been very good at scoring goals the last season and a half.

In Austria thiugh
Sure, but only 25 years old. Similar scoring record to Heber had before transferring to us (he played in the Croatian league, not sure how that compares quality-wise to Austria, but can't be too far off I would imagine).

I also want to be clear that I'm not advocating we sign the guy, I just think it's a bit early to dismiss this potential signing if we aren't going to use any analysis/insight of his time in Austria or any actual game footage of him. Especially considering that he has been a successful striker the last season and a half.

Austrian league is apparently ranked slightly higher than Croatia for what it's worth.

I think if he's a TAM player, fine. I would hope the team is aiming higher than this for a DP, though. But you're right. Without seeing any video or knowing anything about the player, we do have to give these guys a chance and give the front office a chance.

Agree. if he is heber level, he should have an heber level contract. he's no DP.

Just because he may not be obviously "the one" doesn't mean he isn't a good talent add. Guy seems like he has a nose for the goal and could play LW too. To be upset at this target doesn't make sense in vacuum and the assumption that they won't bring in other attackers besides this player is speculative pessimism.
