2021 Roster Discussion

I haven't even worn my shirt yet. But if he wants to go, we need to find a fair price and let it happen.

After we just transferred his promising young academy backup for $2 million.

I agree though. We are a selling league, and with CFG we have the league's best scouting department to find a replacement.

I'd put Taty on winger list. I know he was playing as a #9 but he's NOT that. At all.

Interesting, I was thinking that he's a better striker than winger but can play both. He does most of his damage from the middle of the pitch:

I'm fine with him as the backup striker until Heber is healthy, and to be in competition for the RW spot.

I've seen in several spots people mentioning Taty isn't a #9 and I don't get it in totality.

Perhaps he's not quite a sole striker, a #9 in a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3, but I think generally he's more of a striker in those formations than he is a winger. He's not a very technical dribbler, isn't someone who will get to the end-line and send in a cross, and really doesn't cut in to shoot. When he shoots, he's already central to some degree.

I do think he's probably best as a striker with another to partner with. He's pretty good at getting in behind and stretching the back line, and also is capable to hold the ball up, so I think he can be pretty flexibly paired with any kind of striker.

On the winger argument (and I realize I've had quite a few fairly recent posts about Ronny and his wingers) he actually really does fit in what Ronny wants. He has a high work rate, is decent at pressuring the ball on defense, and crashes the box on the attacking end. I'm still perplexed as to why Ronny never tried him at winger again after the Philly game. Possibly because he wanted to make sure he always had a "fresh striker" available to bring in (when Heber was healthy), but that doesn't seem quite worth it to me, to instead deploy a less talented winger or perhaps a winger that doesn't quite fit your system.

I'm not sold on Heber as our primary striker. I know last year was weird season with covid and all but I still fear he could prove a one season wonder as it were and would like to bring in a proven 9.

I think Heber has good quality and probably our best finisher .. though that's not saying much considering we don't have great finishers on our squad to begin with. But, I think Heber needs a support. He's not the type of player who can take over by himself if need be. Sure, there may be flashes of brilliance, but for the most part, he needs wingers and a smart attacking mid/playmaker to work with. 2020 was a messed up year and when he did play, he was playing with Wing Ring and no Maxi pulling the strings, not to mention GMS and Medina, who he doesn't work the best with. I think he is best with Taty and Isi.

Heber is a great finisher, but not a complete striker. In the right setup (which is what he had in his first year with Dome) he will score a ton of goals, but he’s not going to take the team on his back when nothing else is working.

or, to use a MLS analogy, he’s more Zardes than Josef.

He shouldn't need to. I think that player is going to need to be our #10; and while Maxi has quality, he's not the type to take over. Dictate our offense? Yes, but I think we need to get faster and younger at his position. Unfortunately, I don't think we line up his successor this window.

From the list above, we need 2-3 wingers, 1 starting LB, 1 backup RB, and 1 backup CB.

I would also get a replacement lined up for Maxi at the 10. Someone who comes in mid year maybe or who can play winger when Maxi is playing.

I would use our DP slots on a winger and the Maxi replacement.
