RUMOR: Messi/Pep to MCFC and NYCFC

We disagree. Fine. Don’t make it personal and psychoanalyze with stupid insults as bolded. Old players get hurt all the time and disappoint. It’s not a fucking personality flaw to remember that.

You're right. I shouldn't have written that. Sorry you took offense, it wasn't my intent.

I totally get why people don't want to waste a DP spot on a 37 - 38 year old player, even if it is Messi but when I see our FO/CFG scouts (or whichever other entity may be in charge) constantly dumpster diving for talent in these below-average domestic leagues, it makes me far more open to the idea of an old Messi as a DP.

I'd rather have the real Messi, even at 38, as a DP instead of some unknown 22 yr old who is being hailed as the Estonian Messi, occupying that DP spot.

MLS wrote the DP rule because of Beckham. What do you think they'd do for Messi? Allow 4 DPs with one for players above a certain age to keep the spot competitive?

There is a great level of truth to this. Lionel Messi, and guys who are European superstars, just bring a greater excitement level than Maxi Moralez, even though he was an MVP candidate in 2019. There's certainly something to be said for having one of those buzzworthy players on the roster, if for no other reason than to excite the fanbase to go to watch the guy play. New York City is a star city when it comes to sports -- fans want to see stars, they don't want to see nobodies.

Everything we needed to know about CFG was them keeping Lampard and “allowing us” to take Shay Facey - who they summarily releases when his loan ended
And the 2015 launch party when they introduced our inaugural Man City kit.

That reads more as an argument that Man City should not sign Messi than NYCFC, because you can hide Messi's age-dependent flaws better in MLS than in the PL (though hard to balance that against us getting him 3 years later and any player who doesn't press is a negative in both club's systems).

Without a transfer fee, CFG probably can afford his salary, no matter how ridiculous. FFP is toothless and they'll use his MLS salary to sidestep whatever effect it has, and under MLS rules, a $3M DP and $20M DP are effectively the same with regards to the salary cap (if not actual club finances).

But, I do think whoever obtains Messi is likely to be disappointed, not because he's a poor player overall but he is diminished and the cost/benefit and expectations/reality ratios are so out of whack.
