2021 Roster Discussion

What intrigues me about this signing most is that the fans on Fortuna Dusseldorf's social media seem to be sad to see him go, which makes me hopeful that we are getting a good player. BL quality, BL2 quality. That doesn't sound like a backup to me...

Morales is a very good player, and a guy who gives 110%. He has usually been a starter both in the weaker sides in Bundesliga and in 2nd division, and a fringe USMNT. IMHO he is pretty similar to Ring, a consistent veteran guy, a leader and a bulldog rather than a finesse player. He never saw a tackle he didn't want to go for.

Tentative New Addition

Starting
Striker
: Castellanos
Wing: Jasson, Medina
CAM: Moralez
CM/DM: Parks, Sands
RB: Tinnerholm
LB: Gloster
CB: Chanot, Callens
GK: Johnson

Bench/Idle
Forward
Tajouri-Shradi
CM/DM Morales, Acevedo, Rocha, Haak, Zelalem
LB: Thorarinsson, Amundsen
CB: Ibeagha, Gray
GK Barraza, Mizell

Gloster gets the start over Amundsen by virtue of having, you know, shown up. Deila recently said Jasson is current first option for left wing so he jumped past Shradi, who has never played 90 all that consistently anyway. Morales could very well start, maybe pushing Sands back to CB, but I'm not sure who in the back line then gets displaced. Let me know if I missed any other developments or arrivals.

PS: I confess that after 4 years I still sometimes have to look up which spelling Maxi uses, so a Moralez/Morales midfield combo will confuse me to no end.

Just throwing this out there...

Are we sure Alfredo is coming as a bench warmer? With his experience, he sounds like a starter and maybe displaces parks..

Also, pretty confident Ronny is high on gudi starting at lwb. He had high praise for him. Unless amundsen appears and shows some serious ability and understanding, I'm thinking Ronny starts gudi over gloster... Although I would personally do the opposite.

I'm still of the opinion that we haven't seen Gudi at his best yet. He hasn't had the motivation and hadn't played much last year... but maybe something clicked this year? Or maybe last year with Mata there was some sort of clash that didn't allow him to work to his full potential? idk.

I did say that I think Morales might start. My reason for thinking it pushes Sands back is this:

Also, I doubt Parks gets displaced. We saw Ring on the Wing rather than take Parks out of midfield last year. He started almost every game after the MLS is back tournament.

doesn't matter what his BEST is. based on his play last year, you can tell he doesn't live or die for the team. He gives up on plays when he still might have a chance to make it. He's also slow as hell, and nothing can fix that. Unfortunately, speed is something that is a necessity for a wing back.

I think i missed that part of the interview. Guess that means we're looking at chanot or callens sitting... which one? I'm leaning toward chanot since sands is a right footed player.

Another takeaway for me from that clip is that Ronnie referred to the schedule congestion in August and beyond and the need for depth. I think we are likely to see some roster rotation, more so than last year.

It's also clear that Deila doesn't rate Acevedo at all. And maybe there's a good reason for that.

nico is still pretty young. his potential when signed, was his vision. but if parks is playing well, there's little reason to rely on nico except for rotation. shame that he came as uruguayan young player of the year and spends most of his time on the bench. but such is professional sports.

I guess it’s similar to what they say in baseball. You know.
“You can never have enough pitching.”
NYCFC is like, “ You can never have enough Defensive Midfielders.”
After last year I was wondering if Gudi would end up taking the path Rocha. Remember early in 2019 when he played in the back? I thought he was garbage but he’s actually played fairly admirably defensively in the midfield. And he scored last year!
Anybody have a feeling of what position they want to see Sands play? My initial thought is I want him higher up on the pitch to break up plays earlier. Also, what do you think is best for his long term prospects of making the move to Europe?
Re:Cacha. In his first limited minutes with the team I thought he displayed great energy and good passing ability. He seems to have lost some confidence and passes not as sharp. Without much to go on, I’m wondering if Ronny is a detriment to his progress. I’m still feeling like like Ronny is partial to a North Atlantic/North sea footballer.

I suspect the above. Deila has not shown affinity for younger players so I cannot imagine Gloster supplanting Gudi. He has shown interest in playing "interesting" players at wing, and Maxi has shown front line ability in the past. I can see Medina and Isi trading on and off as starters, but listed Medina in preparation for Isl's annual hamstring/ankle/knee injury.

Morales will need to start in preparation for the Sands sale this summer. Perhaps it is overly optimistic, but it sure seems as if the team is moving towards sending James to Europe in June and bringing in an actual DP or two (maybe? hopefully?).

Sands going to europe is 100% dependent on whether he can stay healthy and improve his positive/forward passing. If he gets injured, yet again, he's not going anywhere.

Maybe? Scally didn't demonstrate anything of note at the professional level and went to Europe. I suspect that there will be buyers - but the level of buyer may be affected by another injury or play style stagnation.

The new contract for Sands and the signing of Morales sure seem to indicate that there have been offers.

scally was signed on his potential alone. sands probably has had interest, for sure. but whether a deal goes through or not is probably going to depend on his ability to stay healthy. no club wants a perpetually injured player. except for us... with gideon... *smh..*

Doesn't this contradict when Deila said that Jasson is his first choice on the left?
