2021 Roster Discussion

Good. There's one. Probably two or three more attacking pieces still to come at some point this season. If we are able to sign the two DP's (assuming one of them is Santiago Rodriguez?), and they both play well here, we might be serious title contenders.

so come summer we all will be like this awaiting new DP's

From Ian on this show it sounds like Ring was becoming a problem which may also have added to his exit.

What show? Can you explain further?

YES did an NYCFC preview show tonight. It'll re-air at midnight if you missed it. You kind of have to read between the lines a bit, but Ian made it clear that there were reasons they jettisoned Ring that were not just purely on-field. Add that to Ronny talking about a lack of leadership and poise in big games, and you that move is beginning to make a lot more sense.

I would say this window and the summer window are one of the most consequential transfer windows in the team's history to date. Either they make a statement of who they want to be, or everyone calling them unambitious will be proven correct.

i think i vaguely remember reading tweets alluding to him being a problem in the Finland NT and that they were not sad with him retiring from their NT but I did not think anything of it. I know he had criticized villa for doing too many "fancy passes" during one of our losses ( i think to RB?).

I know there were verbal fights or "discussions" after some bad losses 2019 after our loss to toronto 4-0 and i think after a RB or Atlanta loss. the dude has a strong/direct character so i can see him rubbing people the wrong way but i dont think it was solely him.

i dont think they will spend like others ( 10M + Transfer fees). so they will try to go with buy low sell high type signings. i think the criticisms will remain unless silverware is won and honestly i think its fair until its proven otherwise.

Ring was a straight forward, get to the point, no sugarcoating kind of guy. It probably rubbed some people the wrong way. You just have to know what you are getting. If he was that big of a problem, I really doubt Reyna would be looking to bring him into an expansion side just to become a problem there.

Always liked him as a player, even though his passing and unnecessary yellows would really piss me off at times. He was the kind of player you could get behind as a fan. Time will tell if moving him along was the right choice but considering we went and signed another d-mid, it seems pretty clear that the deal was made for team cohesion/locker room reasons and not positional, "we have too many d-mids" reasons.

I agree that I'd be surpised to see a $10M transfer fee, but I don't think they're looking to buy low. I really do honestly believe they want to bring in a good player. And they have a pretty good track record of bringing in good players. I'll even count Mitrita as a good player. It didn't work for him here, but it was completely understandable what they saw in him and why they brought him in. Medina is really the only major missed DP they've had since the end of the big-name phase.

I also have to assume that Morales's salary cap impact is less than Ring's.

Ian also called him out for shushing the supporters to the camera (and presumably his subsequent silly “say it to my face” comments). I agree that was poor form by Ring. All signs point to it being a good time to go.

It is still saddening. IMHO Ring was the first organic idol for the fanbase, in the sense that Villa was already a glittering superstar come to lead the team, and Jack was here for too short a time, and Callens is too silent of a leader, and Taty is a fighter but also a flopper, Mata we loved to hate. And we all know that to chant "we all dream of a team of Maxis, a team of Maxis" would be absurd, starting with a potential 5'2" GK, and following with the expense. You cannot build a team from DP materials. I think Ring was the only guy who was proletarian enough, always gave 110% and was here long enough to become a symbol. So I think it's heart breaking and I would much rather had seen Delia depart, tarred, covered in feathers and dropped off at the edge of town.

Yes. At some point Lee directly said that they had to do a certain amount of salary dump because contracts were built with annual increases on the assumption the salary cap would go up every year, but Covid interfered with that. I see no reason to doubt this explanation. It's true of other MLS teams, and indeed, in other sports.

I totally feel this, even though I also agree with:

But I am also quite put off by Ian's repeated after-the-fact dunking on Ring in last night's show. I don't like the ethos whereby you never say a bad word about someone on the team until they're gone, then rip them.
