Confirms my guess:

From the article: "Because they won’t recoup all of the out-of-pocket cash payments they made to acquire and keep Horta on their roster, LAFC will not share any of the $2.75 million transfer fee with MLS, and will also not be able to convert any of the fee into general allocation money."
And that would probably be why Medina is still on the roster.

It’s refreshing that Bob Bradley/LAFC made the quick decision to cut bait when it was obvious the guy was not DP quality for their team, and doing so even while taking a loss. That shows they see the benefit of bringing in a real contributor regardless of the minor purse hit.

May we be so lucky to have a club that thinks that way.

Mitrita's transfer fee to salary ratio is really high, wow.

He's a DP, but his salary is below the DP threshold. Is that a fail?

The resources are not as high as they were the first season. They will never be that high again.

I still prefer this approach to the free agent high salary approach.

Once you assume that they are operating like Spurs now, the model makes sense. It is sustainable, it is “winnable” and they believe some of the non DPs are highly marketable to the fans.

I have a ton of questions from reading this list.

1) Do we assume that the transfer fee paid for Heber was the Jack Harrison GAM? Am I analyzing that right?

2) Sweat makes too much money. That Matarrita salary figure is hard to swallow too considering he isn’t in the TAM range anymore.

3) I think many of our guys are exceeding their wages - Callens, Ring, Sands, Isi specifically. Chanot and Tinnerholm are paid orihabkyntheir worth. Maybe even Johnson.

4) Owosu. Only conclusion I can draw is that he’s signed but doesn’t have a work visa.

Regarding #1, it couldn't have been GAM. The transfer fee was too high to use GAM.

ETA: From the NYCFC article announcing his signing: "Transaction: NYCFC acquires Héber from HNK Rijeka using Targeted Allocation Money."

The spring salaries have been posted. Owusu (likely the academy player) is listed.

Quick fixes:

#1. Renegotiate Maxi to TAM territory next season
#2. Move Medina. Even at a loss.
#3. Mata + Sweat = $620k. Sign a chanot/Callens level player at that position and have a kid back him up.
#4. This will hurt cap bc he’s a HG. But give Sands a raise and long extension. That way we can maximize value when we’re forced to sell him to Europe. Don’t wait for his HG contract to expire to save a little cap room.

All together, not too bad besides not having a difference maker DP, including one spot being wasted. So much was fixed since year 1.

1) Maxi may be gone next season. Otherwise I agree in theory, but that’s only if you bring in a replacement DP. Not sure that’s feasible
2) Agreed
3) Agreed
4) I don’t think James will be around that long. I think he’s gone this winter.

I would hope we get at least 1 more season of Sands, but if someone offered Tyler Adams $, I don't see how the club possibly says no. It's also unfair to the kid to keep him here and sets a bad precedent for the future if you do.

Honestly, our salary situation doesn't seem too bad. Aside from Medina, no one is really glaringly underperforming their contract. Reyna and crew has actually done a pretty good job of roster construction.

Also really nice to see the base salary in the league rising. Aside from a couple reserve players, virtually everyone is making at least 70,000, which is a nice livable wage. Good to see the 40,000 salaries out of the way now -- you really can't live on that in New York.

WRT Sweat, I've noticed the club has a history of keeping high performing (on a relative scale) low end players at least one year after their cost/benefit ratio turns sour: McNamara, RJ Allen, Sweat. I figure one reason for this is that despite the limitations of the salary cap, the club figures that a known limited quantity with flaws they are fully aware of is better than taking a flyer on a newbie based on a few weeks of workouts, even at an inflated price. But only to a point of course; we don't keep them 2 years at that stage. Then I also wonder if there's a bit of marketing going on. Sure the low end players don't have much leverage, but they have some options. Most don't have only one team showing interest. So if you're a marginal USL/MLS player and see that NYCFC spits out guys like you after 1-2 years as soon as you are slated to get a nice raise above the minimum, you might accept a tryout with some other MLS team, or even go USL. Because if you're never going to get paid, even if you perform above expectations, then maybe you'd rather just be in the USL and play more. But you see that NYC will pay you at least one year at an inflated level you probably won't get elsewhere, and that's enticing. It might help us get the best of the low end players and that's worth something.
