  • The value of the MLS TV contract.
  • The ratings.
  • The general level of soccer interest in the US.
  • The overall level of soccer talent in the US.
None of them justify or could sustain the salaries you suggest. MLS could poach the best talent from La Liga, Bundesliga, EPL, Serie A, and Ligue 1, and the result would be a massive jump in overseas television ratings, and the fifth most popular team sport league in the States.

To refine your point further MLS pays teams the total dollar value of the salary cap each year. Besides expansion fees, MLS's major cash flow is its TV rights deal which is worth 90mm a year until 2022. This deal is roughly triple its old TV deal in terms of yearly value.

But the problem is 90/20 = 4.5 and 90/24 = 3.75, this math occurs before taxes, MLS HQ costs, MLS corporate salaries, MLS media expenses ectera.

Without even having the actual tax rate or expenses that are required to keep the corporate show running, I can tell you that MLS as a corporate entity has negative yearly cash flow. This situation will get worse as the salary cap increases yearly, and will probably become accute after the next salary negotiations in four years time.

Right now MLS is something of a Ponzi scheme, it needs to have the 100mm capital injections from new teams pretty frequently in order to balance its annual budget, but doing so worsens its cash flow situation.

Of course the people in charge realize this, but they know that their market is growing so rapidly that they can hope the future TV rights negotiations will largely fix this problem.

The way to alleviate some of the problem while increasing the overall skill base is to do exactly as MLS has done, give more teams TAM, aka money they have to pay out of their own pockets.

Omar Gonzales, in MLS, isn't worth $1 Million a year. I'm sad to see him leave the league, but he also hasn't been that good the last year and a half.

LAG can get a better defender for less, unlike NYCFC, where we are still searching for our first good CB.

I'll take the under on both.

I think he should have been playing exclusively down the stretch with Kreis to give him reps but #BecauseKreis

And why do you not think he's worth upwards of a million dollars?

Because of the salary cap. There's gotta be (on paper) a defender that can do (or at least close to) what Omar does for them that costs wayyyyy less money.

I wouldn't be too concerned about how the league is paying the MLS HG expenditures... the league also has a 10year/$150M (15$M/year) deal with Adidas, not to mention their other league-wide sponsorships - god only knows what the league gets to make Audi, Heineken, Coke, and AT&T, etc official sponsors - it's not chump change.

I would confidently wager that all operating costs/salaries are covered for the league and teams. What's not covered are the construction costs, and that's where the league is "losing" money.

Aren't construction costs picked up by individual teams and not the league.

Yes, the teams pay for construction costs. I was grouping everybody together though because Garber always refers to the teams as a collective when discussing overall finances.

These are the signings that we need to make. NYC, make this happen!

Any opportunity for us to get younger and faster is a A+ move. This kid has a high ceiling and has already been given a couple opportunities with the Costa Rica National Team.

If someone can confirm, I believe he can play LB as well as left mid? I read somewhere that he played LB during his 2 appearances with Costa Rica.

Although not as an exciting prospect as Angelino, he can be a viable replacement and bring speed to our left side which we desperately need. Plus, there's the added potential of a long-term project with him as opposed to the uncertainty of Angelino staying/leaving after half a season.

After watching some vids on him he looks like he'd be an exciting winger. Kids got potential and he's only 21. Make this happen Reyna!

Word. Looked a threat against Impact Montreal and DCU, but I wonder how hard those teams go in CCL:

Was just watching Roma/Genoa game from a week ago. After Florenzi scored great to see him and whole team go straight to Garcia for the celebration. That's a team rallying to show their support for their coach. That's what I'd love to see from us this season (minus the dropped points causing the coach to be in question) - that's a highly functional player/coach relationship.

Thanks for sharing. The kid has a leg which can consequently create more room for Villa on the left side. Also reassuring coach/team trusted him with some spot kick responsibilities...this can create some play-making opportunities with our free kicks & corners (and not rely 100% on Pirlo for next season).
