2016 CCL: MLS vs. LigaMX battle royale

I think the crop of MLS teams for the next CONCACAF Champions League have a decent shot to perform well.
  • Vancouver Whitecaps
  • NJRB
  • Portland Timbers
  • FC Dallas
  • Sporting KC

i do think that its time to get rid of this whole salary cap restrictions and let teams invest in getting better players after the number 3 DP. or at least make it less restrictive.

Well, that's basically Landon Donovan's point. Let teams spend that $12 million on 10 different players instead of 2-3.

and its true....thats how you get better. but i think that goes hand in hand with the salary cap. Get rid of it or increase a lot more than it is now to be able to do this. thats how liga mx teams get the better hand. They have a better 4-11 and at times even beter bench players.

long term the youth system needs to be improved.....but thats another conversation for another time.

Adding together the cap increase of $170,000 and the TAM increase of $800k, the salary "cap" was increased 27.8% this year. I don't understand why people are acting like MLS is doing nothing to help teams get better. The league as a whole probably added 10-20 very good players through the TAM mechanism this offseason. Rinse and repeat next year. Expand TAM again the year after.

We'll get there.

Also the impact of the added TAM and salary increases might take a couple of seasons for teams to utilize to its fullest potential. You got to find the right guy for your team and then you have to have that team gel.

It's really not as easy as just buying a more expensive player and winning. Not when the competition is this close.

I think the issue isn't how much it's increased but how a team is allowed to use those mechanisms. NYCFC is spending $6m ($18m total) per DP with a cap hit of roughly $1.4m total but if that $18 could be spread across 6 players at $3m or 9 at $2m then we'd start to see very balanced squads top to bottom of the roster.
