2017 Season Tactics Thread

I will point you guys to my post in the Vancouver post game match thread. But when Brillant has come on as a defensive stopper in the last 10 minutes, things have been fine. Otherwise, his performances:

@DCU played 90 in a formation as a RCB and in the first time we ever played this formation. I won't hold that on him, but rather PV

@RSL played 90 with a midfield/forward combo that was completely run over

@NJ Cup Match played 90 and did fine. Did have the turnover that ultimately led to the goal, but had no legitimate midfield options to play to.

home against NER for 20+ minutes, the midfield was just conceded and was way too long to do so. This also applies for Vancouver IMO.

Brillant definitely has his faults, and is most definitely overpaid at his current salary. But I'm getting a bit tired of the complete hate of him. Sure we should go get someone better, but I'm not sure we have that option now mid season. And nobody else on our current roster is a better option.

For those games where Brillant has been in and we've underperformed, I put that more on PV than on Fred
Another factor that I don't think anyone mentioned yet is that it's really hard to build form without minutes or consistency. Let alone lack of fluency with team mates.

On the flip side, we've seen how much the talent in this league has improved from last season to this season as a function of more allocation money and general organizational improvement.

Generally I just hate to see fans sink their teeth into a player unless he's shown disrespect for the shirt. And even then. That may be slightly old-fashioned of me.

Ben Sweat is a terrific back-up in this league. He needs to play within himself. Same advice I had for Ethan White and RJ Allen. Just do your job and don't try to make it too complicated. When Sweat tries a 25 yard curler off his right foot - that's when he loses the script.

Disagree, he's been part of some of our most dominant performances. When his role is defined with little attacking need, he's been pretty solid for us.

damn thats a real shame, i've never seen a player who's poor at defending and attacking be considered dominant in any way but carry on i guess.

i mean we have won games with him on the field, not that he did anything productive. i mean this is a guy who will get the ball and dribble out of bounds 2o yards away from our goal, lift leg like a ballerina to stop a perfectly rolling ball that will sail under his foot and go out for a throw right outside our box or give up possession 25 yards out in the middle of the field because he thought the referee was calling for the ball. solid.

I bet your coworkers dread that time of year when 360deg reviews take place.

There are ways of doing it that make you seem like less of a dick and thereby elevate your respect within the group, but whatever...
ok, he's a very good shitty player. does that make you happier or should complement his 2 left feet with perfectly trimmed nails?
because my opinion is different to yours im a dick now.... im ok with that

No, it's the way you express it. He has his limits, and was not good last year, but I do think he's been much better this year.

I do think that unless a player is objectively lazy or has an attitude problem, he shouldn't get called nasty names or belittled or ridiculed - a frank discussion of weaknesses is always okay.

i have a strong opinion on it, maybe its a bit harsh but as a professional soccer player, or playing at that level i dont think he can keep up.

i hated on RJ the same way i do for white, but RJ came around and turned out to be one of the best players last season and i give/gave him credit.
white could do the same, but theres less hope for his case. believe me, at first i didnt think white was that bad until someone pointed it out to me and i started to watch him more closely and boy is he a trainwreck.

i cant even say "hes not good enough yet" because hes 26 and struggles to complete a pass.
defensively he's also a liability. he gets beat more than any other defender on our roster....Chanot, Callens and Ring have made up for him, even Johnson has had to.

So you're highlighted in which magazine issue of the Top 40 Under 40 for your profession? Asking for a guy named Norris.

Reading comprehension probably could have prevented this from spiraling out of control a while ago.

Perfect.

So, I am curious. I found his work in the first part of the year to be much better than what we saw in 2016, when he single handedly dropped points in several games. He certainly wasn't a force going forward (despite a couple of assists), but I thought he handled his defensive assignments pretty well. While I think he was probably the weakest of the Starting XI, he was serviceable and at least avoided big mistakes. It seems you thought he was still pretty bad on each end? What was it you saw?

last game i was at, i think it was either the sounders game, if not the game before. he literally lost 5/6 balls in the back and im sitting there like, "give me a reason to like you already" couldnt even say he was better defensively since he missed at least 3 slide tackles and gave up a stupid foul or two
