2017 Yellow Card Accumulation (updated Oct 14)

What's the rule for a "game" without a yellow? One minute? 60min? On the bench available but not used?

If it's one minute or 60 or somewhere in between, I'd really consider either starting White and making him the first sub as a planned tactical change (3 in back) to essentially logs the minutes and protect his slate, or play the 3/RJ and sub him on for just long enough to get the game counted.

Ring is a tougher one because I don't want to pull him and see the game go to hell (like when Maxi was pulled and Toronto equalized). May just need to keep fingers crossed and tell him to keep it in 2nd gear.

Any appearance. Being in the 18 is not enough, but one minute off the bench will do.

You need to be on your 4th to receive the good behavior reduction. It doesn't work if you're sitting on one through three.
They changed that rule this year. The number of games without a card went up, but no longer has to be when you're one away from a suspension. Discussed with cites and quotes in another thread I can't look up right now.

No, that's not the rule anymore. That's how it worked a couple of years ago. Now, it can be anytime you've got at least one Yellow Card.

Thanks for letting me know. That's a good rule change. Wonder if they would apply a negative number if you're sitting on zero.

I figure if Ring gets the reduction, he probably will still have 1 more suspension by the end of the year, with 1 more on top of that an outside risk -- unlikely but possible. If he cards this game, that would be a suspension plus he the same likelihood of 1 more likely and a second unlikely.
If White gets the reduction he also probably gets one suspension by year end. If he cards now, he could easily again get another by year end, but it's maybe a little less likely than Ring.

You could be right. There will be 10 games left after LA, but only 9 count for yellow card accumulation since yellows in the last game do not carry over to the playoffs.

For either Ring or White, if he doesn't card tomorrow, he'd need 2 yellows for a suspension and 5 for an additional suspension. If he does card tomorrow, he'd get that suspension, and another 3 would get him the additional suspension.

Right now, Ring has 7 yellows in 22 games, or about 1 every 3 games, so he would project to 3 cards over the balance of the season. The good news is that he is only 2 cards in his last 9 after getting 5 in his first 13. So, maybe he is getting a little smarter about how to avoid trouble and can stay clean for the duration - especially if he gets through tomorrow.

Regarding White, he's gotten 4 yellow cards in 18 appearances (16 starts), so give him 1 every 4 games. And, like Ring, his rate has been slowing, with only 1 in his last 9. If he can get through this game, I like his chances to finish the season without a suspension.

Looking at Maxi, he will need 3 in the last 9 games to get a second sit down. He had 5 in his first 19, so not out of the question, but pretty unlikely.

The scary one is The Captain. Villa has 4 yellows on the season (21 starts), but one of those was knocked off for accumulation purposes. So, he would be suspended with 2 more cards in the next 10 games. That's right about the rate at which he's been pulling them down. Of course, last year he sat out a game for yellow card accumulation, and we thrashed Colorado 5-1, so who knows?

However, I think it is easier for Villa to avoid a yellow card then it would be for White or Ring. Remember that last year after he sat out the Colorado game, he didn't get another yellow card all year. And this year, two of the yellows could have easily been avoided. The one against Orlando for throwing the ball at the ref, and one against Minnesota for getting into it with Venegas. Don't usually have to worry about him taking a professional foul or getting a yellow for persistant infringement. Just have to worry about him keeping his head

(Also, on a tangent, I still wanna know the thinking from last year where he got the yellow that led to his suspension. He had to know he was 1 yellow from suspension, and it almost seemed like he did it on purpose)

This is what happens when Gator posts the same thing in 2 threads -- Ulrich Ulrich and I are having a parallel discussion in the other thread. Your points overlap some of both his and mine so of course I think you are brilliant.;)

This is a Forums peeve - nobody should double post, ever. If there's a better thread to put it, and you can't help yourself, then erase/edit the text in the first/misplaced post.

Updated post LA Galaxy game.

Three players in a row suspended when they were 1 game from a good behavior reduction. UGH.

Pray for Herrera and Wallace to stay clean this weekend.

Pray for Bradley Wright-Phillips to get carded on Friday.

If Herrera and Wallace don't get carded this weekend, are we then out of the mud here for a while?

So, we don't want them carded because we play Red Bulls next week. Herrera is four games from the reduction, Wallace is five.

Updated through this past weekend.

No suspensions for either of our next two opponents.

Wallace will serve a suspension for us, but unclear which game. No other players are within one card of a suspension.

Updated for the Colorado game.

Maxi is the man to watch. He can't get a reduction before the last game of the season anyway, so he has to keep it clean until then.

They just updated the disciplinary report on mlssoccer.com. Apparently both Dzemaili and Victor Cabrera picked up yellows in their last match bringing them to 4. So they are both now also 1 yellow card away from suspension.
