2018 International Duty

Callens has 10 callups, is that in the last year he hasn't gotten any? Very interesting since at first glance Peru doesn't have many capable center defenders. I feel much better if we only lose our Costa Ricans.
In this world cup cycle. Peru even played a friendly last month in NJ.

I am Peruvian and I follow the football news out of Peru: Callens will not be called. The current manager is considered a demigod since he took Peru to WC for the first time in 36 years. He's been in charge for over 3 years and has never called Callens even for the shittiest friendly. He is like 8th in the CB depth chart for him.

Interesting article about which MLS players may get called up for the World Cup. It reveals that FIFA requires teams to release players for training beginning May 21. MLS has an exemption until May 28, but it is expected that most MLS teams will release players on May 21 anyway.

Remember too that players might get called up on May 21 and then not make the final roster.

Yikes!!! That’s a lot of matches. For many MLS teams, the season can be won or lost, with a drastic performance swing, during the WC.

Added potential players missing above based strictly on the list provided in the article. Asterisks represent those who were called to their National Team within the last year but were not on their country's most recent first team.

Obviously some of those above won't be called, and some of those won't be involved all the way through the final.

The interesting thing here is that Atlanta and TFC both have 0 on this list.

TFC has to have been stoked when the US didn’t make it - we can all hate on Bradley and Altidore, but TFC is a lot better with them than without.

And their fans don't care because they're Canadian.

Players are beginning to be named to provisional rosters. Today, Omar Gaber was named to Egypt's 29-man provisional roster and Amro Tarek from Orlando also named to Egypt's 29-man provisional roster.

Yep. Today is going to be interesting.

EDIT: Actually, next Monday is going to be interesting - got my Monday deadlines confused. Still, news is trickling in over the week.

This means 2 more months of Ben Sweat. That is not a good thing.
Well, he wasn’t responsible for either goal last night and he put some nice offensive plays together, so IDK.

Sweat did have some great balls into the box, but other than that, he was very not good. He had several turnovers in the first half that we were lucky to survive through, and several really bad passes in our defensive third that put the recipients into really bad spots.

Yep, far from perfect, but are we now counting every players’ turnover that doesn’t lead to a goal (not trying to be snarky) because the list includes everybody on the team?

Sweat absolutely dropped a sublime ball over the defenders to Villa, who, if I recall correctly, didn’t hold his run and would have been able to pick exactly how he wanted to score the sitter.

I am not counting every players' turnovers that doesn't lead to a goal, I just found myself yelling at Ben through my TV last night more than any other player.

And yeah, the first cross he sent in earlier in the match was a great ball that just missed. That ball you are referring to to Villa was straight money. I think Villa should have let that drop to his feet to take on the volley, because he was in a wonderful spot, had space, but not enough power to do anything with the head.

Thank you for pointing this out. “Sweatinho” does a couple of dribbles and hits a nice cross or two but he is a huge liability defensively. It’s as if people are blinded by the “ooh” moments but he is a turnstile on that side. Watch him 1-1, the defender is getting that cross off. Watch him pressure the ball at the top of the 18; that ball is being served in.

It’s not a coincidence that Bradley told his team to consistently build through that side of the field.
