2018 Roster Discussion

this is the same guy that said nashville won the MLS expansion bid but then backtracked.......according to some minnesota people he is usually ok with minnesota stuff but hit or miss elsewhere

I feel better knowing he's less than credible but regardless I'm not happy with even rumors of lazy Yaya coming our way. The guy can't even be bothered to play hard for his own national team can you imagine how little effort he'd give for an MLS club.

it would be MASSIVE let down in terms of what the FO is thinking for our DP's going forward....just old names to keep people interested, not about trying to get a younger much more competitive team

If the FO signs Yaya they either don't listen to the core fan base at all or just don't care what the fans think.

Well for both of those cases I would hope not. I don't want the FO listening to the fans when making sporting decisions. I'm sort of a Yaya fan but that's neither here nor there. For the average soccer-but-not-MLS fan Yaya is a big name they'll know. I think from the perspective of the front office I would guess they see that we had Pirlo and came in second in the league. And sold a billionty three jerseys. Not sure Yaya is at the Pirlo level in terms of popularity but we can come in second just as well with him as we could with Pirlo.

So the FO caring what the core fan base thinks? I hope not. Caring what the average EPL soccer-watching fan might think? Total win (maybe). If you side with the nothing-but-the-Cup folks, then any move the FO makes that keeps us in 6th or higher is just fine as long as people keep buying jerseys. Do I love the thought of Yaya here next year? Not really, but it's probably a good move for the club as a whole. Is it the best move we on the forum can imagine? Probably not, but then again we're not the target audience (or I guess we are but maybe we're not the mass beer-and-shirt buying public).

So as a sporting decision maybe not what we want, but as a business decision probably a good one. As were Pirlo and Lampard. And same as Villa, except with him we lucked out and were able to have it all.

I don't think it's just luck with Villa. I'd argue there was a considerable difference between Villa and the others you list. Age at time of signing:

Villa: 32
Pirlo: 36
Lampard: 36
Yaya: 34

Even today after 3 seasons with us Villa at 35 is younger than either Pirlo or Lampard when they started. I agree with your point that the FO shouldn't be making fan opinion a key part of player signings but I do think they would be wise to factor it into their overall DP strategy. If large segments of the fanbase are annoyed with your past 2 old man signings don't just keep repeating the process and expect people to stick around. If they are signing Yaya as a Pirlo/Lampard like fan attractor they are going to be more than disappoint. I understand because of the affiliation we have a lot of people around here that view the world through baby blue colored glasses but if people really think Yaya is some sort of massive world football name they are kidding themselves.

Also for all the MCFC fans advocating for Yaya's skill, when was the last time you saw him do something meaningful in a game that mattered?

I don't even see Yaya as a big jersey seller. As compared to Pirlo and Lampard, Yaya is merely a blip in the soccer universe.

Yes it’s been a while since he was at his very best. I would say when we beat Liverpool in the 2016 League Cup win. Unfortunately last season he was at loggerheads with Pep until he realised he wasn’t going to win, so knuckled down.

I am not saying the team should sign him, just that he still has something to offer if focused.

I would say winning two La Liga Championships and a UEFA Champions League with Barcelona. Two EPL Championships with Manchester City. Also other cups for both teams is a little better than a blip!

A nice resume aside, as compared to the other two, and as a marketability driver to casual soccer fans in the United States, still a blip.

Yaya can still score screamers at least. Pirlo could barely get something on target.

Well to be fair Pirlo really needs a Vidal and a Poga on each side of him for his free kick game to really be world class. Silly PV just doesn't know how to use him, and us simple minded MLS fans just don't understand.
