Now that the regular season is over, I crunched some numbers on attendance for 2019. I took the numbers from (and was inspired by) Lion's Guess the Attendance thread.
  • Average Attendance: 21,107
  • Weeknights (8 games): 20,035
  • Weekends (9 games): 22,060
  • Weekend Days (6 games): 21,138
  • Weekend Nights (3 games): 23,903
  • Highest Attendance: New Jersey (Sat, Aug 24): 28,895
  • Lowest Attendance: Houston (Thu, Aug 8): 18,113
NYCFC's best attended games have historically been the opener, the last game, and the Hudson River Derby. This year, those ended up as follows.
  • Opening Game - DCU; Sat, March 10, 3pm: 24,361
  • HRD - NJR; Sat, Aug 24, 7pm: 28,895
  • Last Game - ATL; Wed, Sep 25, 7pm: 24,290
Taking those big games out of the data to avoid skewing the results, you get the following.
  • Weeknights (7 games): 19,427
  • Weekends (7 games): 20,754
  • Weekend Days (5 games): 20,494
  • Weekend Nights (2 games): 21,407
  • Highest Attendance: Philadelphia (Sat, June 29): 24,451
A few odds & ends.
  • Weekends drew 10.1% more than weeknights (6.8% if you remove the big games).
  • Weekend nights drew 13.1% more than weekend days (4.5% if you remove the big games); I am dubious about this difference given the small sample sizes.
  • Weeknight games drew the two lowest attended games, and six of the team's eight lowest attended.
  • NYC ranked 9th in league attendance (out of 24 teams), down from 7th (of 22) in 2018.
  • NYC's 2019 attendance was down 9.1% from 2018 and 4.5% compared to the previous low in 2017 (which was skewed by the game in Hartford).
  • Attendance each year: 2015 - 29,016; 2016 - 27,196; 2017 - 22,177; 2018 - 23,211; 2019 - 21,107.

I've always said I love weekend games under the lights.

Good Work!

What do you think the actual attendance numbers are? I know it sounds like a lot, but I'm thinking close to -2k average.

Definitely subtract more than 2k. There were some matches that were very sparsely attended and yet they announced 21k. There were way more seats open than filled in each section.

Was average 21,207 or 21,107?
