2019 General MLS Transfer Rumors

Somebody explain this to me.... Colorado waived a DP. If another team claims him, they’re on the hook for the amount of his salary that they bid up to the max DP amount, with Colorado picking up the balance plus everything above the DP level. So does that mean Col still has part of their Cap take a hit from the DP balance they’re carrying? And what if nobody claims him, what are they on the hook for?

"A club may buy out one player who has a Guaranteed Contract (including a Designated Player’s) during the offseason and free up the corresponding Salary Budget space. Such a buyout is at the club's expense."

Colorado will just be paying for it, it is not on their salary budget.

This is good stuff. So the same rules should apply to GDS. what happens if multiple teams offer $530k for him. Do they go by allocation order?

There was a draft for players waived from non-guaranteed contacts back when. I bet it's the same order.

If that’s the case it’s reverse standings from last year with FCC going after ATL. I guess we’ll find out. Or we won’t, because that’s how MLS operates.

This is a waiver, not a buy-out, because if it was a buyout they’d write it. And teams waive players all the time and aren’t written up as having used their buyout, especially because some teams have waived multiple players. So, I don’t this applies how EganSoccerWords derek_villa has described it, and I don’t think GDS can be claimed by another team for the minimal amount (~$500k) of a DP cap hit.

Claiming a Guaranteed Player
If a player with a guaranteed contract is waived, any interested MLS club will have 48 hours from the notice of waivers to claim the player by notifying the League of the intention to claim the player and the amount of the player's Salary Budget Charge they wish to assume. The player will be awarded based on a number of factors, including but not limited to, which club is willing to absorb the highest Salary Budget Charge. If the highest Salary Budget Charge is submitted by more than one club, the player will be awarded to the club with the lowest points-per-game average.

Right, but does any of the unabsorbed contract hit the former team’s cap? It’s not a buyout, so I’d have to assume something has to hit the cap, otherwise, why not waive as many players as a club is dissatisfied with provided they don’t mind paying extra salaries on the books?

Nothing hits the cap of the original team. That’s the purpose of the one time buy out. However, the salary is paid by that owner/club and not by the league as a whole.

The article does not say this is a one time buyout. It specifically says the player is waived.

In the Athletic, Tenorio says the options for Dos Santos are:
  • he can agree to terminate his contract and become a free agent, or
  • the league can arrange a free transfer to another club, though most transfer windows are closed, or
  • he can go through MLS waivers, and the team that bids the highest portion of his salary gets him, with LAG responsible for the balance. Tenorio thinks this is unlikely

My understanding is that if he drops his contract then transfer window rules are relaxed so he can join most anywhere.
