2019 Offseason Thread

I’m fine with waiting until the Summer as well assuming it’s a difference maker.

ZYanksRule makes a good point. We want to be at our best in November. Waiting til the summer allows the Club to see where we’re really lacking and gives some guys the opportunity they may not have otherwise (Berget, Lewis, Taty).

What concerns me is that I don’t trust them to make a good decision or get a difference maker.

Each of the last two years the team has had extra cap space and TAM to use, and the front office has said they were gonna wait to see how the team played and which positions needed help, and each year the summer transfer window was less than impressive (did we even bring anybody in in 2017?). NYCFC may leave the #1 DP spot open for half the year, but I'm not convinced they're going to get their target this summer. Dome's comment the other day alluded to the club going after players out of contract, and that's gonna limit the options. The key is that their target option will have to want to come to MLS and play for Dome, and neither of those are slam dunks. Plus, most players that have an expiring contract start negotiating/signing 6 months earlier to get something lined up and locked in - if we haven't heard anything yet, then they don't have a contract in place, and every week that passes is going to further limit the dwindling group of free-transfer mega players. Maybe they'll surprise us, and hit their target, or maybe they'll end up popping a wad of cash on a transfer, but as of today, they haven't shown the moxy and ambition to do either.

If we bring our new DP on in July it will be 6 years out of 6 that at least one DP misses at least 10 games.

It will also mean that we intentionally brought in a DP late for the third time in six years, and third time out of 6 DPs.

Also we presumably didn't resign Villa because of age-based injury risk, only to replace him with someone who misses half the season on purpose.

For the record, Dome worked under Guardiola for so many years and coached so many great players, that I'm sure there are a bunch entering the "I wanna go to America" phase and having played under Pepp and Dome might come over. PV was a good young player influence, but Dome will probably be a great older player influence as well.

Villa made the decision to leave. The club would have taken him back, on what terms, I don’t know. But it was Villa’s decision.

I'm not saying that we won't end up with someone out of contract, but what quote alludes to this?

If its not possible to sign a name — I know our fans expect a name — maybe the solution is to sign two or three players to replace David because it is not easy. Normally the players in Europe finish the contract in the summer. Right now, maybe it is not possible to sign a big name. Maybe the solution is that we will try to sign the right players, wingers, strikers, to replace David.”

If the team was gonna pay a transfer fee, they wouldn’t worry about when the player’s contract ends. It’s only when a free transfer is sought that a completed contract is needed.

Gotcha. I guess that does say finish the contract. I took it more along the lines of when the European season ends and when players usually move from club to club and not necessarily to mean that we will only be looking for free transfers. Though, I think our DP history is a better indicator of that (even if it is a small sample size).

we really do always have to be last at everything. It's amazing.
...Hopefully not the league too, however.

Unbelievable, wait until Dome trots out “the team is not there yet” after they lose the first game
